Storm Warnings Issued for 12 Districts Including Dhaka

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued warnings of strong winds and thunderstorms affecting Dhaka and 11 other districts on Thursday, 19 March. Residents and authorities have been advised to remain vigilant as severe weather conditions are expected during the morning hours.

According to a special advisory issued on Wednesday night (18 March) for inland river ports, gusts of wind reaching 60–80 km/h may sweep across the region from the west and northwest between 10:00 pm on Wednesday and 9:00 am Thursday. The warning also highlights the likelihood of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning, which may disrupt normal activities and pose risks to property and river transport.

The districts under alert include Dhaka, Jessore, Kushtia, Tangail, Mymensingh, Faridpur, Madaripur, Barishal, Patuakhali, Comilla, Noakhali, and Sylhet. The meteorological department has instructed river ports in these areas to hoist the ‘Navy Warning Signal No. 2’, indicating heightened caution for all riverine activities. Local authorities and vessel operators have been urged to ensure the safety of navigation and to secure boats, cargo, and other movable assets.

This advisory comes during Chaitra, a period known for sudden squalls and storms locally referred to as Kalboishakhi, which can rapidly create hazardous conditions in riverine areas. The department emphasised that extra precautions should be taken along river routes until Thursday morning, and maritime operations should only proceed if safety measures are strictly observed.
