Fifteen Injured in Madaripur Bus-Truck Collision

At least fifteen people were injured on Thursday morning, 19 March, in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a watermelon-laden truck in Madaripur’s Sadar Upazila. The accident occurred around 6:00 a.m. at Tantibari on the Dhaka-Barishal highway, leaving both vehicles severely damaged and temporarily halting traffic in both directions. Among the injured are passengers and drivers from both vehicles.

According to police reports and eyewitness accounts, a Bogdad Transport passenger bus departed from Dhaka towards Barishal in the early hours. As it approached Tantibari, it collided head-on with a truck coming from Patuakhali carrying a load of watermelons. The impact caused both vehicles to lose control, blocking the highway completely for a period of time.

Fire service personnel, highway police, and local residents rushed to the scene to rescue the injured. Several of those hurt were admitted in serious condition to Madaripur 250-Bed District Hospital. Sheikh Ahaduzzaman, an inspector with the Madaripur Fire Service, stated, “The injured were quickly extracted from the wreckage and sent to hospital. Preliminary investigations suggest that reckless driving was the primary cause of the accident.”

OC Mamun Al Rashid of Mostafapur Highway Police added, “Traffic on the highway was temporarily disrupted due to the collision. Our officers promptly arrived at the site, restored order, and ensured that the injured were transported to hospital.”

A summary of the vehicles involved and casualties is presented below:

Vehicle Type/Load Driver & Passengers Injured Damage Severity Remarks
Passenger Bus (Bogdad Transport) Passenger 30+ 10 Minor to moderate Front section severely damaged
Truck Watermelon-laden 2 5 Minor to severe Some load scattered on road

The incident caused significant disruption during peak morning traffic, with vehicles bound for Dhaka and Barishal stranded in long queues. Local residents reported considerable delays as a result of the temporary road closure.

This accident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety. Experts warn that without strict speed regulation and adequate safety measures, the frequency of such accidents is likely to increase. The local administration has confirmed that an initial investigation is underway and safety advisories will be issued to prevent future incidents.

Authorities also urge the general public to exercise caution on highways, particularly with respect to reckless driving, unsafe overtaking, and overloading vehicles.

Overall, the Madaripur collision, resulting in fifteen injuries, highlights the critical need for maintaining safe distances and controlled speeds on highways. Despite swift response from emergency services and law enforcement, reckless driving remains the leading cause of such accidents, underscoring the ongoing need for road safety vigilance.
