Authorities in Barishal have arrested a father and son in connection with the horrific burning death of a young child. The incident occurred in a residential area in the southern part of the city. The victim, a five-year-old, was reportedly at home when the alleged attack took place. Local police confirmed that the accused have been taken into custody and a case has been filed under child protection laws.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a domestic dispute may have escalated, leading to the tragic event. Neighbours reportedly heard the child’s screams and alerted law enforcement. Paramedics rushed the child to a nearby hospital, but despite medical intervention, the injuries proved fatal. Police officials have stated that they are pursuing a thorough investigation and working with social services to ensure justice is served.
The Barishal District Police Commissioner emphasised the gravity of the case, highlighting it as a stark reminder of the need for enhanced child protection measures. Community members expressed deep concern over the incident, calling for stricter monitoring of domestic violence and more robust support systems for vulnerable children.
In a related development, the Minister of Food, Fisheries, Livestock and Agriculture, Mohammad Aminur Rashid, announced a new government initiative aimed at protecting farmers’ crops against natural disasters. Speaking at a rice distribution event at Shampur High School in Cumilla Adarsha Sadar Upazila, the minister detailed plans to introduce crop insurance schemes. The programme intends to provide financial compensation to farmers whose crops are damaged by floods or other calamities.
The event, organised by the local administration and the Food Control Office, also distributed 30 kilograms of rice to each of the 1,879 beneficiaries from Amratoli Union. Officials including the District Commissioner Md. Reza Hasan and District Food Controller Nityananda Kundu attended as special guests, while the Upazila Executive Officer Fatema Tuz Johra presided over the ceremony.
The minister stressed that the government is actively implementing pre-election commitments, including family cards, farmer cards, and stipends for religious leaders. He highlighted that these measures are crucial for supporting the economy, as a significant portion of the population is directly engaged in agriculture.
| Initiative Name | Objective | Activity | Current Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crop Insurance | Protect against natural disaster losses | Compensation through insurance | Planning stage |
| Family Card | Social security for citizens | Food and medical assistance | Implemented |
| Farmer Card | Financial support for farmers | Loans and incentives | Implemented |

These initiatives aim to strengthen food security, ensure financial stability for farmers, and enhance disaster preparedness across the country. The government emphasises that such measures will continue to expand, offering broader support to the agricultural sector in the years ahead.
