Cyclone Squall Claims Woman’s Life in Comilla

In a tragic incident on Wednesday evening, a sudden cyclonic squall in Muradnagar, Comilla, claimed the life of a 55-year-old woman when a large jackfruit tree toppled onto her makeshift home.

The deceased, Shefali Barman, was a resident of Darikandi village in Jahapur Union. She was the widow of Ranjan Chandra Barman and had been living alone in a tin-shed at her parental home after her husband’s death. Both of her daughters are married and reside elsewhere, leaving her in solitude.

According to family sources, the fatal accident occurred around 8:00 pm when Shefali was having her evening meal. The cyclonic storm struck the area suddenly, uprooting a massive jackfruit tree adjacent to her dwelling. The tree collapsed directly onto the tin-shed, instantly killing her.

Neighbours rushed to the scene after the storm subsided, removing the fallen tree and recovering her body. “It was a shocking sight,” said a local resident. “The storm came suddenly, and there was little anyone could do.”

The Muradnagar police station, represented by Investigating Officer Mohammad Anwar Hossain Chowdhury, stated that their mobile unit was active throughout the night. However, no official complaint or report had yet been lodged regarding the death. Authorities are monitoring the situation and urging residents to take extra precautions during sudden weather events.

The incident highlights the dangers posed by sudden cyclonic squalls in the region, which have become increasingly unpredictable. Experts advise that residents living in temporary or vulnerable structures remain alert and avoid staying under large trees during such storms.
