India Tour Bangladesh in September

Bangladesh are set to host India in a high-profile bilateral cricket series this September, following a significant reshuffle of their international calendar. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has opted to prioritise a home series against India, shelving a previously scheduled tour of Ireland for the time being.

A senior BCB official confirmed the development, noting that discussions are progressing to stage the long-pending India series, originally deferred in 2015. The board is keen to utilise the August–September window to finally deliver the much-anticipated fixtures, capitalising on both sporting and commercial appeal.

Proposed Schedule for India Tour

Date Match Type Venue (TBC)
28 August Arrival
1 September 1st ODI Bangladesh
3 September 2nd ODI Bangladesh
6 September 3rd ODI Bangladesh
9 September 1st T20I Bangladesh
12 September 2nd T20I Bangladesh
13 September 3rd T20I Bangladesh

The decision to host India has had a direct impact on Bangladesh’s planned tour of Ireland. The BCB formally requested Cricket Ireland to defer the series to a later date; however, due to Ireland’s already congested international commitments, no suitable window could be found within the current Future Tours Programme cycle extending to 2026.

A BCB representative explained, “We approached Ireland with a proposal to reschedule, but their calendar is quite packed. We remain hopeful of identifying a feasible slot in 2027.”

Strategic Implications for World Cup Qualification

The scheduling shift carries broader implications for Bangladesh’s ambitions in the ICC ODI rankings and qualification pathway for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup. Currently placed ninth with 79 rating points, Bangladesh recently climbed one position after securing a 2–1 series victory over Pakistan, overtaking the West Indies in the standings.

To secure automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup, Bangladesh must break into the top eight of the ICC ODI rankings by 31 March. With the Ireland series postponed—thereby eliminating a potentially favourable opportunity to accumulate ranking points—the Tigers will now rely heavily on home series against stronger opposition, including New Zealand, Australia, and India.

While hosting such elite teams offers the advantage of familiar conditions, it also presents a more formidable competitive challenge. The India series, in particular, could prove decisive: a strong performance may significantly boost Bangladesh’s ranking, whereas a poor showing could jeopardise their direct qualification hopes.

Uncertainty Over Diplomatic Factors

Despite the optimistic scheduling, the India series is not entirely free from uncertainty. Diplomatic sensitivities between the two nations could still influence final confirmations. Should any complications arise leading to cancellation or postponement, Bangladesh’s qualification campaign would face serious disruption.

In that scenario, the absence of both the Ireland tour and the India series would leave a considerable gap in Bangladesh’s ODI calendar, limiting their opportunities to earn crucial ranking points ahead of the qualification deadline.

For now, however, the focus remains on successfully hosting India in what promises to be a marquee contest, both in terms of cricketing quality and its wider implications for Bangladesh’s international standing.
