The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has apprehended the primary suspect in the high-profile abduction of two-year-old Kazi Fuzail from Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). The arrest took place late on Sunday night around 1:30 am in Keshbpur Bazar, Shayestaganj, Habiganj, according to an official statement released by RAB on Monday.
The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Shahnewaz Chowdhury Bapparaj, has been taken into custody for further investigation.
The abduction occurred on 21 March, during the Eid holidays, when Fuzail had accompanied his mother to DMCH to visit his ailing grandmother. He was reported missing from the hospital premises that afternoon. Following the disappearance, the family received ransom calls demanding 350,000 Taka for his release. The child’s father immediately lodged a case with Shahbagh Police Station, triggering a coordinated investigation by RAB.
On the night of the same day, RAB arrested another abductor, MM Tanvir, in the Dhalpur area of Dhaka. The intelligence gathered from Tanvir’s interrogation enabled authorities to locate and safely recover Fuzail.
The recent capture of Bapparaj is considered a major breakthrough in the case. Both suspects have now been handed over to the relevant police stations, where they will face legal proceedings under applicable criminal statutes. RAB has confirmed that further investigations are ongoing to identify any additional accomplices and understand the full network behind the abduction.
