In Dhaka’s Savar, preparations for the celebration of the nation’s Independence Day and National Day have been fully completed at the National Memorial (Jatiyo Smritishoudh). Tomorrow, Thursday, the President, Prime Minister, opposition leaders, and other dignitaries will pay floral tributes at the site. Following this, thousands of visitors are expected to gather to solemnly commemorate the sacrifices of the brave martyrs who gave their lives during the 1971 Liberation War.
Under the supervision of the Savar Public Works Department, comprehensive arrangements at the National Memorial complex have been concluded. Visitor access was temporarily suspended from 14–25 March to facilitate renovation and beautification works. Accredited media personnel were allowed entry until 23 March.
On-site inspections revealed that workers were planting new flowers and tending to the gardens. The lawns were trimmed and manicured, water sprinklers were used to clean the grounds, and electrical engineers checked the connections of decorative lights. CCTV cameras in critical locations underwent testing. Recent enhancements also include repainting stairways adjacent to the ceremonial podium and refurbishing street lamps with fresh paint. The memorial’s central lake and other areas received maintenance and cleaning to ensure an immaculate environment.
Abdul Matin, who was tending the flower beds, stated, “We have planted flowers for Independence Day. The President, Prime Minister, and other guests will visit, and people will come from across the country and abroad. We want the site to look its best for everyone.” Meanwhile, Abul Kalam, involved in road repairs using cement and sand, said, “Working here brings us great satisfaction.”
Anwar Khan, Assistant Engineer and Officer-in-Charge of the National Memorial, said, “Ahead of Independence Day and National Day, the complex has been thoroughly cleaned, painted, adorned with flowers, and CCTV cameras have been installed to ensure smooth and safe proceedings.”
According to a 13 March press release from the Information Department, no arches, posters, banners, or festoons have been installed on the route from Gabtoli, Dhaka, to the National Memorial in Savar, in accordance with government directives. Morning inspections on Wednesday confirmed that the roads were clear of such decorations. Road maintenance continued along the Dhaka–Aricha Highway, including repainting of dividers and removal of dust and debris by trucks.
Dhaka District Police Superintendent (SP) Mizanur Rahman confirmed that a three-tier security system has been implemented to ensure the safety of all attendees. Important points within the complex are monitored via CCTV cameras. He added that despite the presence of high-profile dignitaries at the memorial on 26 March, traffic along the Dhaka–Aricha Highway will remain largely uninterrupted, with adequate traffic police deployed to maintain order.
The following table summarises the key preparations and security measures:
| Category | Measures Undertaken | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Landscaping & Floral Arrangements | New flowers planted, lawns trimmed, fountains cleaned | Aesthetic appeal for visitors and dignitaries |
| Electrical & CCTV Systems | Light connections tested, CCTV cameras installed and checked | Safety and surveillance |

With these comprehensive measures, the National Memorial is fully prepared to host the nation’s Independence Day and National Day ceremonies in a safe, orderly, and dignified manner.
