At least four people, including a woman and a child, were killed and two others seriously injured in a tragic road accident on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway in Cumilla’s Burichang upazila on Thursday evening.
The fatal collision occurred around 7pm in the Kalakchuya area, directly in front of the Miami Hotel, when a passenger bus struck a private car, leaving the smaller vehicle completely mangled and unrecognisable.
According to police, the accident involved a bus operated by the “Star Line” transport company. Witnesses and officials said the bus rammed into the private car with significant force, crushing it on impact.
The driver of the private car died instantly at the scene due to the severity of the crash. Three other passengers were later declared dead after being taken to hospital. Authorities believe the victims may belong to the same family, possibly a father, mother and child, although this has not yet been officially confirmed.
Two additional passengers, including a child, sustained critical injuries in the collision. They were rescued from the wreckage and immediately transported to the Cumilla Cantonment General Hospital and Cumilla Medical College Hospital, where they remain under treatment.

Following the incident, traffic movement along the busy highway was temporarily disrupted as the wreckage obstructed a major section of the road. Commuters experienced delays until law enforcement personnel arrived and restored order.
Police from the Moinamoti Highway Police Station swiftly reached the scene, removed the damaged vehicle, and worked to normalise traffic flow.
Officer-in-Charge Md Abdul Momin confirmed the sequence of events, stating that the private car was struck from behind or the side by the speeding bus, resulting in catastrophic damage.
Authorities have yet to identify the deceased officially, as efforts continue to confirm their identities and notify their families. Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident, including whether speeding, reckless driving, or mechanical failure played a role.
The highway stretch where the crash occurred is known for heavy traffic flow, particularly on inter-district routes between Dhaka and Chattogram, and has witnessed multiple serious accidents in recent years.
Officials have reiterated calls for stricter adherence to road safety regulations and increased monitoring of long-distance passenger transport services to prevent further tragedies.
As investigations continue, the incident has once again highlighted ongoing concerns over road safety on one of the country’s busiest national highways.
