Multi-Vehicle Crash Injures Fifteen in Bogura

At least fifteen people were injured, including two in critical condition, following a dramatic multi-vehicle collision involving three trucks and a passenger bus in Sherpur upazila of Bogura district.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 pm on Saturday (28 March) along the Dhaka–Bogura Highway near the graveyard area of Mirzapur Union. The crash triggered significant disruption on one of the region’s busiest transport corridors, leading to a prolonged traffic standstill and widespread panic among commuters.

Local authorities confirmed the incident, with Raiich Uddin, Officer-in-Charge of the Sherpur Highway Police Camp, verifying that emergency services responded swiftly to the scene.

Sequence of events

Preliminary information gathered from police and eyewitness accounts suggests that the accident began when a stationary or slow-moving empty truck attempted a U-turn on the highway. At that moment, a Dhaka-bound truck loaded with potatoes approached at speed, narrowly attempting to avoid a collision.

However, before it could manoeuvre safely, a third truck travelling behind struck the potato-laden vehicle forcefully from the rear. The impact caused severe damage to the front section of the middle truck, leaving it badly crushed and obstructing the roadway.

Shortly afterwards, a Dhaka-bound passenger bus approaching from behind lost control and crashed into the already damaged truck, resulting in a chain-reaction collision involving all four vehicles.

Casualties and emergency response

Emergency responders, including local residents, police officers, and fire service personnel, quickly arrived at the scene following distress calls. The injured were rescued from the wreckage and transported to nearby medical facilities.

Two of the injured victims were admitted in critical condition to the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura. The remaining victims are receiving treatment at various hospitals in the district. Authorities have yet to release the identities of those injured.

The collision resulted in severe traffic congestion stretching nearly three kilometres along the highway. Hundreds of passengers and drivers were left stranded for hours as emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage and restore partial traffic flow.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos immediately after the collision. One bystander, Mizanur Rahman, said he heard a loud crashing noise followed by successive impacts as vehicles collided one after another, sparking panic among those nearby.

Another local resident, Mozaffar Hossain, stated that villagers rushed to the scene to assist in rescuing the injured before ambulances arrived. He described the situation as “extremely alarming”, noting that several victims were trapped inside heavily damaged vehicles.

Ongoing response

Sherpur Highway Police confirmed that injured individuals were transported to hospital without delay and that efforts were underway to remove the damaged vehicles from the highway. Authorities temporarily diverted traffic through service lanes, allowing only slow movement in the affected stretch.

Officer-in-Charge Raiich Uddin stated that police teams were working to restore normal traffic conditions as quickly as possible while ensuring safety on the highway. An investigation has been launched to determine the precise cause of the chain collision and whether negligence or road discipline failures contributed to the incident.
