Husband Jailed For Wife’s Prayer-Time Murder

A shocking domestic homicide case in Noakhali has come to a judicial conclusion after nearly five years of legal proceedings. On 3 January 2018, in the Mucchapul Union of Companiganj Upazila, a housewife, Shahanara Begum, was brutally killed by her husband, Golam Sarwar, while performing her morning prayers. The perpetrator reportedly strangled his wife with a towel, causing fatal asphyxiation.

On Tuesday, the Noakhali Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 delivered a life imprisonment sentence. The verdict was pronounced by Judge Mohammad Khorshedul Alam Sikdar, marking the end of a prolonged and highly distressing legal process.

Tribunal sources confirmed that Golam Sarwar, aged 40, was married to Shahanara Begum and that the couple had two children. The crime was reported immediately by Shahanara’s father, who filed the case the same day. Notably, Shahanara’s young son witnessed the incident; he was only nine years old at the time. His testimony played a critical role in establishing the sequence of events in court.

Public Prosecutor (PP) Md. Selim Shahi confirmed that the murder occurred while Shahanara was engaged in her prayers. “The act of killing a woman during prayer was unequivocally proven in court,” he stated. “The evidence, including eyewitness testimony and supporting materials, was thoroughly examined. The tribunal has now delivered its verdict, which we believe will serve as an important deterrent against domestic crimes in society.”

Legal experts observing the case noted that the premeditated nature of the murder underscored serious domestic discord. Golam Sarwar’s actions demonstrated not only extreme violence but also a blatant disregard for the safety of his family, including his children. The life sentence serves as a stern reminder of the legal consequences of such violent crimes.

Following the verdict, social workers emphasised the importance of awareness campaigns on domestic violence and child protection. The surviving children are currently under the care of close relatives, with community organisations offering support. Observers have suggested that the tribunal’s decision may set a precedent in Noakhali and beyond for handling cases involving intimate partner violence and child witnesses.

This tragic case highlights the urgent need for proactive measures against domestic abuse and reinforces the principle that the law can and will intervene to protect vulnerable individuals.
