Three-Nation Oil Import Plan

The government has initiated procedures to import oil from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Kazakhstan as part of efforts to address the ongoing energy supply challenges, according to the Cabinet Secretary, Nasimul Gani.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday night (2 April) at the National Parliament Complex following a Cabinet meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, he said that global disruptions in energy markets had prompted Bangladesh to explore alternative sources of fuel.

The Cabinet Secretary noted that instability in international supply chains, driven in part by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, had made oil procurement increasingly uncertain. As a result, the authorities are now working to diversify import sources to ensure stability in domestic energy availability.

He confirmed that formal processes for importing oil from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Kazakhstan have already begun. While specific shipment volumes, pricing structures, and delivery timelines were not disclosed, officials indicated that negotiations are ongoing to secure reliable long-term supply arrangements.

Mr Gani further emphasised that the government remains committed to easing public hardship arising from the energy situation. He stated that subsidies within the energy sector would continue, with the aim of cushioning consumers from sudden price fluctuations and maintaining economic stability.

According to him, the administration is adopting a multi-pronged strategy that includes expanding the import basket, maintaining fiscal support for essential fuels, and strengthening coordination with international suppliers.

Summary of Import Diversification Plan

Country Status of Process Initiated Strategic Purpose Notes from Government Statement
Malaysia Process underway Diversification of supply sources Part of alternative procurement strategy
Indonesia Process underway Enhancing regional energy security Aimed at reducing dependency on single region
Kazakhstan Process underway Securing non-Middle Eastern supply routes Included due to supply chain instability

Officials added that the current global energy environment has underscored the importance of reducing over-reliance on any single geographical region. The government, therefore, is accelerating efforts to broaden its import network to ensure uninterrupted fuel supply for transport, industry, and power generation.

The Cabinet Secretary also highlighted that the authorities are closely monitoring international market conditions and will adjust procurement strategies accordingly. He reiterated that safeguarding consumers and maintaining energy stability remain the government’s top priorities amid continued external volatility.
