Shreyas Iyer Fined ₹3.6 Million for Slow Over-Rates

The 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season has delivered a stinging financial blow to Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer. Within the span of just two matches, the skipper has been penalised a cumulative total of ₹3.6 million (36 Lakhs) for failing to maintain the required over-rate. These sanctions highlight the BCCI’s increasingly stringent stance on maintaining the pace of play in T20 cricket.

A Costly Recurrence

The disciplinary woes began on 31 March during Punjab’s encounter against Gujarat Titans in New Chandigarh. As it was the team’s first offence of the season regarding slow over-rates, Iyer was handed a standard fine of ₹1.2 million. However, the lesson appeared unlearned. Just days later, on 3 April, during a high-stakes clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the Punjab Kings once again failed to initiate their final over within the stipulated timeframe.

Under Clause 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, a second offence results in a doubling of the penalty for the captain. Consequently, Iyer was fined ₹2.4 million for the CSK fixture, bringing his personal total to ₹3.6 million in under a week.

Collective Accountability and Tactical Disadvantage

The repercussions of the delay against Chennai extended beyond the captain’s wallet. For a second offence, the entire playing XI—including the Impact Player—is subject to a fine. Each member was docked either 25% of their match fee or ₹600,000, whichever is lower.

Beyond the financial hit, the team suffered a significant tactical blow on the field. Due to the delay, Punjab was forced to operate with only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle for the final two overs. This restriction often proves fatal in the death overs, as it grants batsmen more gaps to exploit, directly influencing the match outcome.

Summary of Disciplinary Actions

Date Match Offender Violation Penalty
31 March PBKS vs GT Shreyas Iyer 1st Slow Over-Rate ₹1.2 Million Fine
2 April SRH vs KKR Abhishek Sharma Dissent/Gesture 25% Match Fee + 1 Demerit
3 April PBKS vs CSK Shreyas Iyer 2nd Slow Over-Rate ₹2.4 Million Fine
3 April PBKS Team Entire Squad 2nd Slow Over-Rate 25% Match Fee Fine

Discipline Issues Across the League

The crackdown has not been limited to over-rates. Sunrisers Hyderabad batter Abhishek Sharma also found himself in the crosshairs of the match referee on 2 April. Following his dismissal against Kolkata, Sharma displayed visible dissent and made inappropriate gestures toward the umpire’s decision. For this breach of the Code of Conduct, he was fined 25% of his match fee and handed one demerit point.

The Looming Threat of Suspension

For Punjab Kings, the root of the problem lies in their bowling discipline. In the match against Gujarat, the team conceded 14 extras, including 11 wides. These additional deliveries contribute significantly to time slippage. Should the team commit a third over-rate offence this season, the penalties will escalate to a ₹3 million fine for Shreyas Iyer and, more critically, a one-match suspension. With the tournament intensfying, Punjab must rectify their temporal management or risk losing their leader at a pivotal moment.
