The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has extended the captaincy tenures of all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz and wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das, confirming that the pair will continue to lead Bangladesh’s limited-overs sides through the next ICC World Cup cycles.
The decision was officially announced on Saturday, 4 April, following a board meeting, with Nazmul Abedin Fahim briefing the media. Under the new arrangement, Miraz will remain One Day International (ODI) captain until the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, while Litton Das has been entrusted with the Twenty20 International (T20I) captaincy until the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The extension reflects the BCB’s intention to maintain continuity and stability in the national team’s leadership structure ahead of two major global tournaments. Officials believe that consistent captaincy will help strengthen team planning, player development, and tactical cohesion over the coming years.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who initially took charge of the ODI side on a one-year term, has been rewarded for his leadership following Bangladesh’s recent 2–1 series victory over Pakistan national cricket team in March. The board viewed this success as a positive indicator of his growing authority and tactical maturity.
Litton Das, meanwhile, was first appointed T20I captain until the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. However, Bangladesh’s non-participation in that tournament due to security-related concerns effectively altered the competitive timeline. Despite this disruption, the board has reaffirmed its confidence in Litton by extending his leadership through to the next T20 World Cup cycle in 2028.
Alongside the captains, the BCB has also confirmed continuity in the vice-captaincy roles. Najmul Hossain Shanto will continue as ODI vice-captain, while Saif Hassan retains his position as T20I vice-captain for the same duration.
Officials have emphasised that maintaining a stable leadership group across formats will allow for clearer communication between players and management, while also ensuring smoother transition during squad rotations and long international tours.
The BCB’s decision is also aligned with its broader strategic roadmap aimed at preparing competitive squads for future ICC events. With both the 2027 ODI World Cup and the 2028 T20 World Cup on the horizon, the board is prioritising long-term planning over short-term experimentation.
Cricket analysts have noted that Bangladesh’s recent performances in bilateral series, particularly in ODI cricket, suggest an upward trajectory that the board hopes to sustain through consistent leadership.
| Role | Player | Format | Tenure |
|---|---|---|---|
| ODI Captain | Mehidy Hasan Miraz | One Day Internationals | Until 2027 World Cup |
| T20I Captain | Litton Das | Twenty20 Internationals | Until 2028 World Cup |
| ODI Vice-Captain | Najmul Hossain Shanto | ODI | Same period as captain |
| T20I Vice-Captain | Saif Hassan | T20I | Same period as captain |
With these extensions, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has signalled a clear commitment to stability and structured development. As Bangladesh prepares for the next phase of its international cricket journey, the leadership of Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Litton Das is expected to play a central role in shaping the team’s competitiveness on the global stage.
