Real Madrid suffered a dramatic late defeat in the La Liga after conceding a stoppage-time winner in a 2–1 loss away to RCD Mallorca, dealing a significant blow to their title ambitions.
Despite dominating large phases of the contest, Carlo Ancelotti’s side were punished for their lack of clinical finishing, as Mallorca struck twice from limited opportunities to claim a crucial victory in their battle against relegation.
The defeat leaves Real Madrid on 69 points from 30 matches, suffering their fifth league loss of the season. Meanwhile, Barcelona, with 73 points from 29 games, remain in pole position in the title race and could extend their advantage further depending on other results. Mallorca, with 31 points, climbed out of the relegation zone into 17th place following their eighth win of the campaign.
Real Madrid controlled more than 60 per cent of possession and registered multiple attempts on goal, yet were repeatedly denied by an inspired performance from Mallorca goalkeeper Leo Román. Madrid managed six shots on target, with only one successfully converted, while Mallorca scored with both of their attempts on target.
The hosts took the lead shortly before half-time through Manu Morlanes, who finished clinically after receiving a pass from Pablo Maffeo. Although initially off balance, Morlanes regained control and struck a right-footed effort past goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.
Earlier in the match, Real Madrid had already been frustrated by several missed opportunities. Kylian Mbappé and Arda Güler both went close on multiple occasions, only to be denied by the outstanding reactions of Román. The Mallorca goalkeeper also kept out an early effort from Manuel Ángel, setting the tone for a disciplined defensive display.
After the interval, Real Madrid intensified their attacking pressure. Mbappé was again thwarted by Román, while a number of promising chances went begging as Mallorca’s defensive structure held firm.
At the hour mark, Vinícius Júnior entered the field as a substitute, replacing Manuel Ángel in a bid to inject pace and creativity. However, his influence was initially limited, as a difficult angled effort flew wide shortly after his introduction. Mbappé also came close again but failed to hit the target, sending another attempt over the crossbar.
Madrid eventually found a breakthrough in the 88th minute. Éder Militão, also introduced from the bench, rose highest to meet a corner delivered by Trent Alexander-Arnold, heading home to restore parity and seemingly rescue a point for the visitors.
However, just when momentum appeared to have shifted, disaster struck in stoppage time.
In the first minute of added time, Mallorca launched one final attack. Vedat Muriqi reacted quickest inside the box, converting from close range after a well-timed assist from Mateo Joseph. The finish sparked jubilant scenes among the home supporters and left Real Madrid stunned.
The result marked a significant setback in the La Liga title race, particularly given Madrid’s dominance in possession and chances created. Their inability to convert pressure into goals ultimately proved decisive, while Mallorca’s efficiency in front of goal secured a memorable victory.
