Europe Insurance Model that Could Change Bangladesh Economy

In Europe, insurance is embedded as a structural component of economic activity and daily life, rather than functioning solely as an optional financial product. Policy observers and industry analysts note that the region’s well-regulated and broadly adopted insurance systems contribute to economic stability and risk management, making it a frequently cited reference for developing economies such as Bangladesh.

According to international market estimates, the European insurance sector is projected to reach approximately €1.3 trillion during the 2025–26 period. The industry has recorded a stable average annual growth rate of around 4 per cent. Data from Swiss Re and Insurance Europe indicate that Europe’s combination of strict regulatory frameworks and relatively high living costs has contributed to widespread dependence on insurance coverage across multiple sectors of economic and social activity.

In 2024, Western Europe registered an estimated 6 per cent increase in total insurance premium collection. Growth was particularly strong in life and health insurance segments, reflecting continued demand for long-term financial protection and healthcare-related coverage. Life insurance expanded at a faster pace compared with the previous year, indicating sustained consumer engagement with savings-linked insurance products. A sector analysis by PwC reports ongoing expansion in mergers, acquisitions, and investment activity within the European insurance market, pointing to increasing consolidation and maturity.

A major characteristic of the European insurance sector is its accelerated digital transformation. Insurers are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence systems, data analytics, and mobile-based platforms to manage underwriting, claims processing, and customer services. These developments have improved operational efficiency and reduced processing time across many insurance functions. Industry projections suggest that digital insurance adoption will continue to expand across European markets in the coming years.

Findings from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development show that insurance penetration rates in advanced economies have consistently increased, with several European countries exceeding global averages. In digitally advanced markets such as the United Kingdom, a significant proportion of insurance transactions is now conducted through online platforms, reflecting broader digital integration in financial services.

Insurance in Europe is often described as an “invisible safety system” supporting economic and social functions. In many countries, insurance coverage is mandatory for activities such as driving, property rental, and international travel. In healthcare systems, insurance plays a central role in facilitating access to medical services. Liability insurance, particularly third-party coverage, is widely used to mitigate financial risks for individuals and businesses.

In contrast, Bangladesh’s insurance sector remains relatively underdeveloped. According to available data, insurance contributes approximately 0.4 per cent to the country’s gross domestic product, compared with around 8 to 10 per cent in several European economies. The Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority has identified key constraints including slow claims settlement processes, limited public awareness, and structural regulatory challenges that restrict sectoral growth.

Experts suggest that introducing mandatory insurance in selected areas, expanding digital insurance infrastructure, and ensuring faster and more transparent claims settlement mechanisms could significantly improve sector performance in Bangladesh. Such reforms are expected to attract investment, enhance financial stability, and strengthen risk management capacity for individuals and institutions.
