A Dhaka court has granted a four-day remand for six individuals arrested in connection with the killing of a young man, identified as Alex Imon, during a violent clash between rival teenage gang groups in the capital’s Mohammadpur area.
Following a hearing on Thursday (16 April), Metropolitan Magistrate Monirul Islam issued the order after law enforcement sought further custodial interrogation of the accused. The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Sadhan Kumar Mondal, had initially petitioned for a seven-day remand for each suspect, but the court approved a four-day period for questioning.
According to police submissions, the accused were detained in connection with the fatal stabbing that took place amid what authorities described as a confrontation between organised juvenile groups with prior enmity. Law enforcement officials further stated that sharp weapons allegedly used in the attack have been recovered and that preliminary interrogation indicates varying degrees of involvement among the arrested individuals. Several of the accused are also reported to have prior allegations linked to criminal activities.
The deceased, Alex Imon, was reportedly attacked on 12 April in the Bashbari area of Buddhijibi Road under Mohammadpur Police Station jurisdiction. According to the case statement, members of a rival group surrounded him in the afternoon, allegedly due to longstanding hostility. He was then repeatedly struck with sharp weapons, sustaining critical injuries. Local residents later rescued him and transported him to a hospital, where attending doctors declared him dead.
The victim’s mother, Ferdausi Begum, filed the murder case, naming 21 individuals and including a further 10 to 12 unidentified persons as accused. Police have confirmed that operations are ongoing to apprehend those still at large.
