The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-13) has apprehended two suspected drug traffickers in Rangpur, seizing a substantial quantity of Tapentadol tablets. The operation, which took place on Friday, resulted in the recovery of narcotics with an estimated local market value of approximately 1.35 million BDT (roughly £8,500).
Acting on intelligence reports, a specialised team from the RAB-13 headquarters conducted a raid in the Sahabajpur Lahirirhat Bazar area, located within the Chandanpat Union of Rangpur Sadar Upazila. During the operation, law enforcement officers intercepted two individuals acting suspiciously on the paved road connecting Rangpur and Badarganj.
Upon conducting a physical search and inspecting the bags carried by the suspects, officers discovered 6,800 units of Tapentadol tablets. These substances were immediately seized as evidence. According to a press release issued by RAB-13 on Saturday morning (18 April), the suspects had been involved in the clandestine trade of narcotics for a significant period.
The two arrested men originate from the Dinajpur district and are believed to be active members of an organised drug trafficking syndicate.

Tapentadol is clinically classified as a potent opioid analgesic, primarily prescribed for the management of moderate to severe acute pain. However, due to its sedative properties, it has increasingly become a subject of misuse. In response to rising addiction rates, the Government of Bangladesh categorised Tapentadol as a ‘Group A’ controlled substance under the Narcotics Control Act in 2020.
Law enforcement officials noted that the illegal distribution of such tablets has escalated recently, posing a severe risk to public health, particularly among the youth. The syndicate reportedly sourced these tablets from various regions to supply them to dealers in Rangpur and neighbouring districts.
Residents of the Lahirirhat Bazar area stated that the location has long served as a transit point for drug traffickers due to its strategic road links. Local community members have expressed that consistent surveillance and regular operations by the authorities are essential to curbing criminal activities in the region.
Senior Assistant Director of RAB-13, Biplob Kumar Goswami, confirmed that legal proceedings are currently underway. A case has been initiated against the suspects at the local police station under the Narcotics Control Act. Furthermore, RAB has stated that investigative efforts will continue to identify and apprehend other associates linked to this trafficking network.
