Akshay Kumar Recalls Three Near-Fatal Stunt Accidents

The veteran Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, widely recognised by his moniker ‘Khiladi’, is currently the subject of significant public discourse following the theatrical release of his latest cinematic venture, Bhoot Bangla. Directed by Priyadarshan, the film features an ensemble cast including Wamiqa Gabbi, Rajpal Yadav, Mithila Palkar, and Paresh Rawal. While the film has garnered a mixed reception from audiences and critics on social media, the actor’s storied career and his commitment to performing high-risk action sequences remain a focal point of his professional legacy.

A Legacy of High-Risk Performance

Throughout a career spanning over three decades, Kumar has established himself as a premier action protagonist. Unlike many of his contemporaries who rely extensively on professional stunt doubles, Kumar is renowned for executing his own stunts. In a recent and candid interview with journalist Shubhankar Mishra, the actor detailed three specific instances where he narrowly escaped death while filming.

Three Life-Threatening Encounters

The actor categorised these incidents as pivotal moments where the pursuit of cinematic realism led to genuine peril.

  • The Sainik (1993) Incident: During the production of this military-themed action film, Kumar was required to traverse between two buildings using only a wire. Reflecting on the event, he admitted that while he initially felt confident, his physical strength failed him mid-transit. His grip weakened significantly, and he nearly plummeted from a lethal height before being rescued.

  • The International Khiladi (1999) Collision: The second near-fatal accident occurred during a maritime action sequence. Kumar was suspended from a moving boat when a catamaran suddenly crossed his path. The actor noted that the proximity of the vessel was so extreme that he faced the risk of being physically severed by the impact. He escaped with his life by a very narrow margin.

  • The Khiladi 786 (2012) Aerial Stunt: The third incident took place during an ambitious aerial manoeuvre involving a helicopter and a hot air balloon. Kumar attempted to transition from the helicopter to the balloon in mid-air, a feat that resulted in another life-threatening situation due to the technical complexities and environmental variables involved.

Summary of Reported Near-Fatal Stunts

Film Title Release Year Nature of Stunt Specific Danger Encountered
Sainik 1993 Wire crossing between buildings Muscle fatigue led to near-fatal fall
International Khiladi 1999 Hanging from a moving boat Impending collision with a catamaran
Khiladi 786 2012 Helicopter to hot air balloon jump High-altitude technical failure
Live Award Shows Various Setting himself on fire (Pyrotechnics) Uncontrolled combustion risk

Domestic Perspectives on Safety

Despite these harrowing experiences, Kumar continues to participate in dangerous displays, including live award show performances where he has set himself alight using controlled pyrotechnics. When questioned regarding the concerns of his wife, former actress and author Twinkle Khanna, Kumar indicated that while the risks are inherent to his craft, his family has gradually become accustomed to his professional rigour. He noted that Khanna no longer attempts to dissuade him, acknowledging his long-standing dedication to performing his own stunts as a core component of his identity as an actor.

Kumar’s career continues to be defined by this intersection of entertainment and physical risk, a characteristic that remains prevalent in his recent work and public appearances.
