Railway Police Constable Dies by Self-Inflicted Gunshot

A police constable serving in the Khulna Railway District Police has died from a gunshot wound to the head. The incident occurred during the early hours of Saturday, 18 April 2026, while the officer was on duty in the armoury area of the police lines.

Incident Overview

According to official reports and CCTV footage reviewed by the authorities, the deceased, identified as Constable Samrat Biswas, used his service weapon to shoot himself in the head. The event took place between 4:30 am and 5:00 am at the Railway Police barracks located in the Sonadanga area of Khulna.

Colleagues stationed at the barracks reported hearing a gunshot during the dawn watch. Upon investigating the source of the noise near the armoury, they discovered the constable with a critical head injury. Medical assistance was sought immediately, but the officer succumbed to his injuries.

Samrat Biswas was a career officer who joined the Bangladesh Police in 2018. He had been serving with the Khulna Railway District since November of the previous year. He was originally from the Kashiani Upazila of Gopalganj District.

Official Statements and Procedures

Ahmed Mainul Hasan, the Superintendent of Police (SP) for Khulna Railway Police, confirmed the details of the tragedy to the media. He stated that the department had regarded Biswas as a competent and disciplined officer during his tenure.

“One of our constables died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound between 4:30 am and 5:00 am at the Railway Police barracks in Sonadanga,” SP Hasan noted. He further added that while the CCTV evidence provides a visual record of the act, the underlying motive remains unknown. The police department has not yet established why the constable took such an extreme step.

The Superintendent confirmed that the body has been transported to the Khulna Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. This procedure is a standard legal requirement to verify the cause of death and provide a formal forensic record for the ensuing investigation.

Ongoing Investigation

While a formal inquiry committee has not yet been established, SP Hasan indicated that a high-level probe will be commissioned shortly to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death. Investigators are expected to examine the officer’s recent mental state, work environment, and personal history to determine any contributing factors. The railway police authorities are currently gathering further information to assist the forthcoming committee in its findings. Case proceedings regarding the unnatural death are expected to follow the completion of the autopsy.
