Afghanistan’s celebrated leg-spinner Rashid Khan has revealed that he once declined opportunities to obtain citizenship from both India and Australia, along with the chance to represent those nations in international cricket. The disclosure appears in his autobiographical work Rashid Khan: From Streets to Stardom, where he reflects on pivotal moments in his professional journey.
According to Rashid, the offers were made during a period when his performances in global franchise cricket had already established him as one of the most sought-after spin bowlers in the world. Notably, he states that around the 2023 Indian Premier League season, discussions were initiated that went beyond standard franchise commitments and extended to long-term residency and national representation.
While playing for Gujarat Titans, Rashid recalls being informed by a team official that a senior figure associated with Indian cricket management wished to meet him. During the subsequent interaction, he was reportedly presented with the possibility of remaining in India on a more permanent basis, supported by official documentation that could facilitate citizenship and, in turn, eligibility to represent India at international level.
He describes the proposal as unexpected and significant, particularly given the stature of Indian cricket. However, Rashid maintains that he responded with gratitude while firmly stating his intention to continue representing Afghanistan, emphasising his emotional and national commitment to his country of birth. A similar opportunity, he notes, was also communicated from Australia, which he likewise declined on the same principle.
Rashid’s decision highlights his consistent stance on national loyalty, despite the professional advantages that could have accompanied such transitions. His career trajectory has been closely tied to Afghanistan’s rise in international cricket, and he has frequently been regarded as one of the central figures in the team’s development on the global stage.
