Rising Homicides Raise Nationwide Alarm

A marked escalation in homicide cases has been reported across the country, with authorities attributing the surge primarily to domestic disputes, struggles for local dominance, narcotics-related conflicts, land ownership disagreements, and factional violence. In a growing number of incidents, victims have been killed by close family members, highlighting the deepening strain within households and communities.

Concentrated violence in recent incidents

Within a single 24-hour period across five districts, at least ten people were killed. In Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf sub-district, police recovered three blood-stained bodies from a remote hilly area. In Naogaon’s Niamatpur, a couple and their two children were found murdered inside their residence. In Feni’s Daganbhuiyan, a man was killed following a dispute with his younger brother involving an iron rod. In Kushtia’s Kumarkhali, another fatal stabbing occurred in a family altercation between siblings.

These incidents reflect a broader pattern of interpersonal violence increasingly spilling into fatal outcomes.

Rising homicide trend

Police Headquarters data indicate a consistent upward trajectory in recorded murder cases over the past three years.

The figures show a clear year-on-year increase, with the first quarter of 2026 recording the highest total. Officials have noted that some 2025 data included reclassified or previously unresolved cases, particularly in February and March, when 83 and 77 older cases respectively were added to new filings.

Broader crime landscape

Alongside homicides, several other categories of crime have shown fluctuating but persistent levels, reflecting wider public safety concerns.

While some categories, such as theft, show a slight decline, others, including kidnapping and violent sexual offences, remain at concerning levels. Robbery and snatching cases also demonstrate volatility, indicating shifting patterns of street-level crime.

Weapons and security concerns

Following political unrest on 5 August 2024, a significant cache of police firearms and ammunition was reportedly looted from multiple installations. According to official figures, 5,763 firearms and 652,008 rounds of ammunition were stolen. Of these, 1,323 firearms and 257,144 rounds of ammunition remain unaccounted for, raising serious concerns among security analysts regarding potential misuse.

Attacks on law enforcement

Violence against police personnel has also shown an upward trend. In the first three months of 2026 alone, 147 incidents involving attacks on officers were recorded. Comparable figures stood at 171 injured officers in 2025 and 123 in 2024, indicating sustained pressure on frontline law enforcement.
