Bangladesh’s national teams are heading into a busy stretch of international cricket, but neither the men’s nor the women’s side will have a member of the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) selection panel travelling with them on their next overseas assignments.
The Bangladesh men’s team are currently preparing in Mirpur, with the likes of Najmul Hossain Shanto and Litton Das among those involved in training ahead of their upcoming fixtures. The side’s next destination will be the United Arab Emirates, where they are scheduled to face Afghanistan in a Test before taking part in a tri-series involving Zimbabwe.
The women’s team, meanwhile, are currently in Japan for the Asian Games. Once their campaign in the competition is over, the players will return home briefly before travelling to Australia. Bangladesh are scheduled to face the hosts in an ODI series during that tour.
Despite the importance of both assignments, no BCB selector is expected to accompany either national team. The decision marks a departure from a practice that had become familiar in Bangladesh cricket, with at least one member of the selection panel traditionally travelling with the squad during bilateral series, whether at home or abroad.
The presence of a selector on tour has generally allowed the selection panel to observe players directly in an international environment. It can also provide selectors with an opportunity to assess performances, monitor emerging players and maintain closer communication with the team management while a series is under way.
The BCB, however, is now moving towards a more selective approach to such travel arrangements. According to board sources, selectors will no longer be expected to accompany the national teams on every series. Instead, the board intends to assess the importance and requirements of individual tours before deciding whether a selector should be sent.
That means the absence of selectors from the upcoming Australia and UAE tours is not necessarily a permanent change to the way the selection panel operates. Rather, it reflects a policy under which their presence will be determined on a tour-by-tour basis.
The change comes as both Bangladesh teams continue to maintain increasingly demanding international schedules. The women’s side face the challenge of moving from the Asian Games to a series in Australia, while the men are preparing for a Test against Afghanistan followed by a multi-team competition involving Zimbabwe.
For the players and coaching staff, the immediate focus will remain on preparation and performance. For the selection panel, the new approach means that direct observation on tour will be reserved for series where the BCB considers it necessary.
The upcoming assignments will therefore provide an early indication of how the board’s revised policy works in practice. Whether selectors travel for future series will depend on the nature and significance of each tour, rather than following the previous practice of maintaining a selection-panel presence on every bilateral assignment.
