MetLife Bangladesh has introduced the MetLife Health Savings Plan (MHSP), a new life insurance product that combines critical illness protection with health-focused savings and access to funds for eligible healthcare expenses.
The launch comes as healthcare costs are becoming an increasingly significant financial concern for families in Bangladesh. At the same time, insurance coverage in the country remains considerably lower than global averages. Against this backdrop, MetLife said the new plan is intended to help customers prepare financially for future medical needs while maintaining protection against serious illnesses.
The MHSP is designed to go beyond conventional health protection by allowing policyholders to build a dedicated fund for future healthcare expenses. At the same time, they remain covered for a range of critical illnesses specified under the policy.
According to MetLife Bangladesh, the plan provides protection against several major health conditions, including cancer, heart disease, stroke, kidney failure and major organ transplantation. Other illnesses may also fall within the coverage, depending on the specific terms and conditions of an individual policy.
A key component of the new plan is the MetLife Health Wallet. The facility allows policyholders to access eligible accumulated value during the policy term for healthcare-related expenses. Customers can use the facility through a dedicated Health Card, subject to the applicable conditions and provisions of the policy.
The structure of the plan is intended to address two financial needs at the same time. Customers can prepare for future medical expenses by accumulating funds, while the insurance component provides protection against specified serious illnesses. This approach is different from a policy focused solely on providing a benefit after a critical illness occurs.
Healthcare expenses can place considerable pressure on household finances, particularly when treatment involves a serious illness or extended medical care. Planning for such costs in advance can therefore form part of a family’s broader financial arrangements. The MHSP has been introduced with that consideration in mind, according to the company.
MetLife said the product reflects the growing need for financial preparedness around healthcare in Bangladesh. With insurance penetration still below international averages, the company sees scope for products that combine protection with mechanisms that help customers prepare for future expenses.
The Health Wallet is also intended to give policyholders greater access to accumulated funds during the policy term, rather than restricting the value of the savings component until the end of the arrangement. However, the ability to access and use those funds will depend on the eligibility criteria and other provisions set out in the policy.
Customers considering the plan will need to review the policy documents carefully, particularly the illnesses covered, applicable conditions, eligibility for Health Wallet access and the permitted use of the Health Card. Coverage and benefits will be governed by the specific terms and conditions of each policy.
With the launch of the MetLife Health Savings Plan, MetLife Bangladesh is bringing together health-related savings and critical illness protection within a single life insurance solution. The company said the initiative is aimed at helping customers prepare for future healthcare costs while retaining financial protection against major illnesses.
