Real Madrid returned to winning ways in La Liga on Tuesday night with a 2-1 victory over Alavés at the Santiago Bernabéu. Despite the three points, the club remains in a precarious position regarding the league title race. Before kick-off, Álvaro Arbeloa’s side trailed league leaders Barcelona by nine points. While this victory narrow’s the gap, the deficit remains significant with only a handful of matches remaining in the domestic campaign.
The hosts established control in the first half, though the opening goal involved a degree of fortune. In the 30th minute, Kylian Mbappé recorded his 24th league goal of the season when his strike took a deflection off an Alavés player, wrong-footing the goalkeeper and finding the back of the net.
Real Madrid extended their lead early in the second half through a moment of individual brilliance from Vinícius Júnior. The Brazilian winger unleashed a powerful long-range effort that clinicaly beat the opposition keeper. Although Real Madrid dominated much of the proceedings, Alavés managed to reduce the deficit during injury time. Toni Martínez scored in the final minutes of the match, though it proved to be merely a consolation for the visitors.
The victory moves Real Madrid to 73 points after 32 matches. However, Barcelona currently sit on 79 points with a game in hand. Hansi Flick’s side is scheduled to face Celta Vigo tonight; a win for the Catalan giants would restore their nine-point cushion at the summit.
| Team | Matches Played | Points | Gap to Leader |
| Barcelona | 31 | 79 | – |
| Real Madrid | 32 | 73 | 6 Points |
For Real Madrid to retain the title, they must win their remaining six fixtures and rely on Barcelona to drop points in at least three of their final seven matches—a scenario widely considered unlikely given Barcelona’s current form.
The victory comes during a period of intense scrutiny for manager Álvaro Arbeloa. Following Real Madrid’s exit from the Champions League quarter-finals last week, the club faces the possibility of a second consecutive season without a major trophy. Addressing his future and the title race, Arbeloa stated:
“We have six matches ahead of us. The next one is in three days. Our goal is singular: to win every remaining match. As a team, this is the objective we have set.”
When questioned about the speculation regarding his tenure beyond the current season, Arbeloa remained focused on the club’s immediate needs: “I do not think much about the personal risks for me. I prioritise what is important for Real Madrid.”
Real Madrid’s pursuit of the league leaders continues this Friday. They are scheduled to face Real Betis at 01:00 BST (Saturday). With the margin for error virtually non-existent, Arbeloa’s squad requires a perfect run to keep their mathematical title hopes alive.
