US Seizes Iranian Shadow Vessel

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has confirmed the interception of a vessel linked to Iran’s so-called “shadow fleet” in the Arabian Sea, alleging that it was transporting energy commodities worth billions of dollars to international markets in breach of sanctions.

According to a statement shared via social media platform X, the operation took place in the early hours of Saturday when a United States Navy helicopter intercepted the vessel identified as MV Saven. The ship was reportedly carrying petroleum, gas, and other refined energy products believed to be destined for overseas buyers.

CENTCOM stated that the vessel was operating as part of Iran’s “shadow fleet” — a term widely used to describe a network of tankers and cargo ships allegedly employed to circumvent international sanctions imposed on Iranian oil exports. These ships are often accused of obscuring ownership, disabling tracking systems, or conducting ship-to-ship transfers at sea to evade detection.

Following the interception, the vessel was placed under US naval supervision and is now reportedly being redirected back towards Iranian waters. CENTCOM claimed that this action forms part of a broader enforcement campaign aimed at restricting Iran’s ability to export oil and gas outside authorised channels.

Earlier this month, US military authorities had announced an intensified maritime monitoring policy, stating that vessels suspected of transporting Iranian-origin oil either departing from or heading towards Iranian ports would be intercepted, diverted, or detained where necessary. Officials described the ongoing effort as part of a strategy to fully enforce restrictions on Iranian port activities and energy exports.

While Iran has not issued an official response to the latest incident at the time of reporting, previous similar operations have been strongly criticised by Tehran, which has accused the United States of violating international maritime law and engaging in economic coercion.

The Arabian Sea remains a strategically sensitive maritime corridor, with significant global energy shipments passing through nearby routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, making enforcement actions in the region geopolitically significant.
