Worker Killed in Kishoreganj Collapse

A construction worker has died and three others have been injured after a gate under construction collapsed at the BSCIC Industrial Estate in Kishoreganj district, Bangladesh.

The incident occurred on Sunday at around 6:30 p.m. at the main gate of the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) industrial estate located in Maria Union under Kishoreganj Sadar Upazila.

According to local accounts, several workers were engaged in construction work on the main entrance structure when the accident took place. The collapse occurred during roof casting operations, following rainfall earlier in the day. It is reported that the supporting framework, commonly known as shuttering or centring, became unstable and failed under load, leading to the sudden collapse of the structure.

Casualties and Identifications

One worker was declared dead while undergoing treatment at Kishoreganj Sadar General Hospital. Three others sustained injuries of varying severity and are receiving medical care at the same facility.

The deceased has been identified as Rasel Mia (25), son of Manik Mia from Sholomaria village in Kishoreganj Sadar Upazila.

The injured workers are:

• Hasan Mia (22), son of Dulal Mia from Sholomaria village
• Ali Swapon (35), son of the late Abdur Razzaq from Maria village
• Rana Mia (26), son of the late Golam Mostofa from Matikata village under Noabad Union in Karimganj Upazila

Rescue Operation

Abdullah Khalid, station officer of Kishoreganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, stated that a fire service unit responded promptly after receiving information about the incident. Rescue operations were carried out at the site to retrieve the trapped workers and assist in transporting the injured to hospital.

Local resident Akkas Ali reported that approximately 15 to 20 workers were engaged in construction activities at the gate at the time of the incident. He added that after rainfall in the afternoon, the formwork used for concrete casting appeared to have weakened, which may have contributed to the structural failure.

Following the collapse, local residents assisted in the immediate rescue efforts before the injured were taken to Kishoreganj Sadar General Hospital, where Rasel Mia was later pronounced dead.
