The messaging platform WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is preparing to introduce a new feature that will allow users to carry out mobile phone recharges directly within the application. With this development, users will no longer need to rely on separate mobile applications or websites for prepaid top-ups.
The feature builds on WhatsApp’s existing digital payment infrastructure. The platform already supports a range of financial services, including money transfers, receipt of funds, and bill payments through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Following positive user response to these services, the company is expanding its offerings to include mobile recharge functionality.
Once the feature is rolled out, both Android and iOS users will be able to access mobile recharge services provided they have the latest version of the application installed. The integration aims to streamline everyday digital transactions by combining communication and payment services within a single platform.
To use the service, users will be able to navigate to the attachment icon within a chat window or access the payment section via the application menu. From there, they can select the mobile recharge option, enter the desired phone number, choose the relevant mobile network operator, and then select from available recharge plans.
Payment will be completed through UPI. Users who have already linked their bank accounts will be able to authorise transactions directly, with the amount deducted accordingly. Those without linked accounts will need to add and verify a bank account before completing any recharge process.
