The Superintendent of Police (SP) for Chattogram, Mohammad Nazir Ahmed Khan, has disclosed that 23 homicides have been recorded in the Raozan Upazila of Chattogram since 5 August 2024. Addressing a press conference held at the Chattogram District Police Office on Monday, 27 April 2026, the SP detailed the deteriorating security situation and the measures being implemented to restore order.
According to the police, the surge in violence is primarily attributed to struggles for territorial dominance. Investigations indicate that these fatalities often stem from disputes involving the illegal occupation of sand quarries (balumahal), unlawful hill cutting, soil extraction, and extortion. SP Khan emphasised that the motive behind the crimes would not provide immunity to the perpetrators, stating that anyone involved in criminal activities would be brought to justice without exception.
The SP further asserted that the authorities would no longer tolerate the activities of terrorists in the Raozan and Rangunia regions. He noted that the police are committed to taking all necessary actions to ensure public safety and to prevent criminals from disrupting the peace of the residents.
The press conference highlighted two recent fatalities that occurred over the weekend. On Saturday, a young man named Kawsar Zaman Babul was shot dead in Raozan. This was followed by the murder of Nasir Uddin, who was shot at approximately 9:00 pm on Sunday in the Lenga Bailyar Ghata area of the same Upazila.
In response to these specific incidents, the police have apprehended five individuals, including the primary suspect. To manage the heightened tension, additional police personnel have been deployed across Raozan, and strategic checkpoints have been established, particularly in the hilly sectors of the district.

SP Nazir Ahmed Khan explained that certain areas within Chattogram are prone to terrorism due to their geographical and environmental characteristics. He cited “Jangal Salimpur” as a formerly notorious crime hub that has since been cleared of terrorist elements. Building on this precedent, the police have identified several other vulnerable zones where special operations commenced on Sunday night.
The Superintendent concluded by stating that the legal process would remain impartial, regardless of the political or social identity of the accused. The police department is categorising individuals solely based on their criminal actions, with investigations and subsequent legal proceedings being determined by the severity of the offences committed. The scale of the ongoing operations is expected to intensify in the coming days to ensure the complete stabilisation of the region.
