The measles outbreak in Habiganj continues to escalate, placing increasing pressure on the district’s healthcare system. At the 250-bed District Modern General Hospital, medical staff are reporting a steady rise in admissions linked to the highly contagious disease.
According to hospital sources, 41 patients diagnosed with measles are currently receiving inpatient care. Over the past 24 hours alone, a further 10 patients have been admitted, underscoring the continuing spread of infection within the district.
Since the onset of the outbreak, a total of 190 individuals presenting with measles symptoms have sought treatment at the facility. Of these, 130 patients have made full recoveries and been discharged, while 19 cases required referral to higher-level medical institutions due to complications. The remaining patients are either under active treatment or observation.
Healthcare professionals have acknowledged that the sudden rise in cases has placed additional strain on hospital resources, though they state that contingency measures have been implemented to manage the situation. An isolation ward has been designated specifically for measles patients to ensure infection control and continuous monitoring. Access to this ward has been strictly restricted in order to minimise the risk of further transmission within the hospital environment.
A civil surgeon in Habiganj noted that measles, while highly infectious, is preventable through timely immunisation and proper healthcare intervention. He emphasised the importance of ensuring full vaccination coverage among children and increasing public awareness, particularly among guardians and caregivers.
In response to the outbreak, a special vaccination campaign was launched across the district on 20 April. Health authorities have expressed optimism that this initiative will help curb the spread of the disease. Alongside vaccination efforts, public awareness programmes are also being conducted to educate communities about symptoms, prevention, and the importance of early medical attention.
Public health experts have stressed that controlling measles outbreaks requires a coordinated approach. This includes timely vaccination, early detection of cases, effective isolation of infected individuals, and adherence to basic hygiene practices. They further caution that lapses in immunisation coverage can significantly increase vulnerability to outbreaks of this nature.
