A 70-year-old woman has been allegedly hacked to death by her grandson following a dispute over the transfer of land in Phulpur upazila of Mymensingh district, Bangladesh. Police have arrested the accused following the incident, which occurred on Wednesday night in Jatia village under Bhaitkandi Union.
The deceased, Ayesha Khatun, was the daughter of the late Nabi Hossain of the same village. The accused, Jasim Uddin, aged 35, is the son of the late Mahidul Islam. The two shared a close familial relationship as grandmother and grandson.
According to police and local sources, Ayesha Khatun had long been separated from her husband. Her only son passed away earlier, and Jasim Uddin was raised by her after his father’s death. His mother later remarried and lived elsewhere. Jasim subsequently established his own household near his grandmother’s residence after getting married and has two children.
However, following recent domestic complications, his wife left him, leaving him to live alone. Ayesha Khatun owned a significant amount of agricultural land, parts of which were cultivated by Jasim. Tensions reportedly escalated when Jasim began pressuring his grandmother to formally transfer ownership of her land to him, allegedly fearing that relatives from his maternal uncle’s side might later claim a share of the property.
The dispute between the two had been ongoing for some time. On Wednesday night at around 9:00 pm, a fresh argument broke out between them regarding the land issue. The confrontation quickly turned violent when Jasim allegedly attacked his grandmother with a machete, striking her repeatedly. Ayesha Khatun died at the scene due to her injuries.
Local residents later overpowered Jasim and handed him over to the police after informing authorities.
Police officials confirmed that the body was recovered from the scene and an inquest report was prepared. Legal proceedings have been initiated in connection with the incident.
