A domestic dispute over land in Keraniganj on the outskirts of Dhaka has ended in tragedy after a 70-year-old man was allegedly killed by his step-son during the early hours of Friday morning.
The victim, identified as Md. Shahi Islam, son of the late Nurul Islam, was found dead at his residence in Goalkhali village under Shakta Union of Keraniganj Model Police Station area at around 5:00am on 1 May.
Police have detained the accused, 26-year-old Alamin, who is the son of the victim’s wife from a previous marriage.
According to police and local sources, long-standing tensions had been brewing within the family, primarily centred on disputes over land ownership. Shahi Islam had multiple marriages, and disagreements among his children over property division had reportedly caused ongoing friction.
Locals further stated that both the victim and his step-son were known to have issues with substance abuse and often spent time together despite their strained relationship.
On the night of the incident, the victim and Alamin reportedly stayed in the same house and were sleeping in adjacent or shared quarters.
In the early hours of the morning, an argument reportedly broke out between the two men. The verbal dispute quickly escalated into a physical confrontation. During the altercation, Alamin allegedly attacked his step-father with a knife, stabbing him in the abdomen.
The severity of the injury caused Shahi Islam to collapse on the spot. He died almost immediately due to excessive bleeding.
His wife, Nazma Begum, and two daughters, Mim and Lamia, who were in another room, rushed to the scene after hearing cries. They discovered him lying motionless on the floor. Their screams alerted neighbours, who then gathered at the house.
A local union member, Rahim Khan, subsequently contacted the national emergency helpline and informed the police, while also helping to detain the suspect at the scene until officers arrived.
Keraniganj Model Police quickly reached the location, recovered the body, and conducted an initial inquest report. The body was later sent to Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital morgue for autopsy.
The accused, Alamin, was taken into custody shortly after the incident.
Police have confirmed that preparations are underway to file a murder case, with the victim’s wife expected to lodge a formal complaint.
