FC Barcelona last appeared in a UEFA Champions League final in 2015, when they defeated Juventus to claim their fifth European title. Since that triumph, the Catalan club have gone 11 seasons without reaching the final again, despite several deep runs in the competition.
In the current campaign, Barcelona’s European journey ended in the quarter-finals, where they were eliminated 3–2 on aggregate by a Madrid-based side. The defeat extended their long wait for a return to the tournament’s decisive stage.
Head coach Hansi Flick, aged 61, has nevertheless maintained strong belief in his squad’s quality and competitiveness. Flick, who previously enjoyed major success with Bayern Munich, including UEFA Champions League and domestic titles, has publicly stated that Barcelona remain capable of competing with Europe’s elite.
His comments came during a season in which attention was also drawn to a remarkable Champions League semi-final first leg between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. The match, played at the Parc des Princes, ended 5–4 in favour of Paris Saint-Germain, producing the highest-scoring semi-final in the competition’s history. Flick watched the match after Barcelona’s elimination and expressed disappointment at Bayern’s defeat, given his previous association with the German club.
Since their 2015 Champions League triumph, Barcelona have twice reached the semi-finals but failed to progress to the final on both occasions. The club has also experienced setbacks in European competition more broadly, including participation in the UEFA Europa League during the 2022 and 2023 seasons after failing to advance from the Champions League group stage.
Under Flick’s leadership, Barcelona have shown signs of improvement in European competition but have yet to restore their former dominance. Their most recent quarter-final exit followed a closely contested two-legged tie, ultimately lost 3–2 on aggregate.
Despite these results, Flick has remained firm in his assessment of the squad’s potential. When asked whether Barcelona can compete at the same level as teams such as PSG and Bayern Munich, he responded unequivocally: “100%, yes.”
| Season | Competition Stage | Result | Opponent |

| 2023 | UEFA Europa League (after UCL exit) | Eliminated from UCL | Not applicable |

Barcelona’s post-2015 European record reflects a mix of deep runs and early exits, contrasting sharply with their earlier dominance. Nevertheless, Flick’s comments underline his conviction that the squad still belongs among Europe’s leading sides.
