The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has disclosed significant findings regarding the homicide of Bullet Bairagi, an Assistant Revenue Officer of the Customs, Excise, and VAT Department. According to the elite force, a professional gang of muggers, posing as legitimate passengers, orchestrated a fatal trap to rob and subsequently kill the official. Following a series of coordinated raids across various locations in Comilla, five suspects have been apprehended in connection with the crime.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Sohag, Ismail Hossain Joni, Imran Hossain Hridoy, Rahat Hossain Jewel, and Sujan. All five suspects are residents of the Kotwali Police Station area in Comilla.
The details were formally shared during a press conference held on Monday, 27 April 2026, at the RAB Media Centre in Karwan Bazar, Dhaka. Wing Commander M.Z.M. Entekhab Chowdhury, Director of the RAB Legal and Media Wing, confirmed that the suspects were part of an organised criminal network that specifically targeted commuters on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
Bullet Bairagi, a non-cadre officer from the 41st BCS, was returning to Comilla on the night of 24 April 2024 after completing a 44th basic training programme in Chittagong. Family sources indicated that the official had maintained communication with them via telephone as he approached his destination; however, he failed to return home.
Investigations revealed that the official arrived at the Jagurjhuli Bishwaroad area at approximately 3:00 am on Friday. One of the suspects, Jewel, approached Bairagi to enquire about his destination. When the official stated he was heading towards Jangalia, the suspects Sohag and Hridoy offered him a seat in their CNG-powered auto-rickshaw, which was already occupied by other members of the gang posing as passengers.
During the journey, the gang members—specifically Sohag, Joni, and Hridoy—brandished sharp weapons and a hammer to intimidate the official. A struggle ensued as the victim attempted to resist the robbery. The assailants reportedly struck Bairagi with sharp instruments before forcibly seizing his mobile phone, bag, and a small amount of cash. In a final act of violence, the suspects pushed Bairagi out of the moving auto-rickshaw.
The body of Bullet Bairagi was discovered approximately 12 hours later, at 8:45 am on 25 April, near a hotel in the Kotbari area along the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. Officers from the Mainamati Highway Police recovered the remains, noting multiple signs of blunt-force and sharp-object injuries on the victim’s head and face.
Following the discovery, the victim’s mother filed a murder case against unidentified individuals at the Comilla Sadar South Model Police Station. The RAB Intelligence Team subsequently launched a covert operation, utilising surveillance and secret informants to track the perpetrators.
During the arrests, law enforcement officials seized several items of evidence, including:
The CNG-powered auto-rickshaw used in the commission of the crime.
A cleaver (chappati).
A switch-gear knife.
A hammer.
Bullet Bairagi was the only child of Sushil Bairagi and hailed from Dumuria village in the Tungipara Upazila of Gopalganj. At the time of his death, he was stationed at the Bibibazar Land Port in Comilla. He resided in a rented property in the Rajganj Panpatti area of Comilla city with his wife and child.
Bairagi had departed for Chittagong on 11 April to attend his professional training. His sudden death has caused profound grief within the customs department and his local community.
The RAB confirmed that the professional gang involved in this homicide had a history of committing similar robberies under the guise of providing transport. The suspects have been handed over to the relevant police authorities for further interrogation and legal proceedings. Law enforcement agencies have reiterated their commitment to ensuring a thorough prosecution to secure justice for the deceased official and his family.
