Man Stabbed to Death While in Prostration at Mosque

An elderly man was killed inside a mosque during the dawn prayer in Sreemangal upazila of Moulvibazar district, Bangladesh, on Sunday (3 May). The deceased has been identified as Hafiz Uddin, aged 78, a resident of West Loiarkul village under Bhunbir Union.

According to local residents and police sources, the incident occurred at West Loiarkul Jame Mosque during the Fajr prayer. As the mosque did not have a permanent imam, Hafiz Uddin was leading the congregation. He was in the act of prostration (sujood) during the prayer when the attack took place.

At that moment, a man identified as Jasim Mia, aged 30, entered the mosque and launched a sudden attack on the elderly worshipper. Witnesses reported that the assault happened inside the prayer hall while other worshippers were present and the prayer was ongoing.

Hafiz Uddin sustained severe injuries in the attack. Worshippers and local residents immediately attempted to rescue him and arranged for his transfer to a hospital. However, he died on the way before receiving medical treatment.

Following the incident, police from Sreemangal Police Station arrived at the scene shortly after being informed. Law enforcement officers detained the suspect, Jasim Mia, from the locality. Authorities confirmed that the accused and the victim are from the same area.

Police stated that the motive behind the killing has not yet been established. Investigators are currently examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, and further details are expected to be released upon completion of the investigation.
