A 65-year-old woman was reportedly killed and her gold ornaments and cash were allegedly stolen by a group of hired agricultural labourers in Chandina upazila of Cumilla, an incident that has caused widespread concern in the locality.
The incident took place around 1:00 am on Saturday (2 May) in the Alipur village under Suhilpur Union of the upazila. The deceased has been identified as Shamiron Begum, wife of Abdul Baten, a resident of the same village.
According to the victim’s son, farmer Bashir, he had brought four labourers from Cantonment Bazar on Monday to assist with paddy harvesting work at his home. He stated that one of the labourers allegedly stole a mobile phone from the house and fled a day before the incident. Following this, the remaining labourers reportedly assured the family that they would recover the stolen phone and continued staying at the residence.
Bashir further alleged that during the late hours of the night, the labourers tied up his mother and killed her by strangulation. After the killing, they allegedly looted approximately 70,000 Bangladeshi taka in cash along with gold ornaments worn by the deceased, including jewellery from her nose, ears and neck, before fleeing the scene.
He also stated that he had noticed reluctance and irregular behaviour among the labourers since the beginning of their work. Their conduct reportedly became more suspicious after the incident of mobile phone theft.
In the morning, Bashir discovered his mother’s body after going to call her and finding no response.
