The government has appointed new Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to Natore, Gaibandha, and Rangpur districts as part of an administrative reshuffle within the field administration. The Ministry of Public Administration issued a formal notification detailing the transfers on Wednesday night.
According to the official circular, Sumoni Akter, a Deputy Secretary currently serving in the Posts and Telecommunications Division, has been assigned as the new Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate for Natore.
In the same administrative order, Dr Md Moniruzzaman, who has been serving as Private Secretary (PS) to the Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives, has been transferred to take charge of Gaibandha district.
Additionally, Israt Jahan, a Deputy Secretary attached to the Ministry of Home Affairs, has been posted as the Deputy Commissioner of Rangpur.
In Bangladesh’s administrative structure, the Deputy Commissioner serves as the primary executive officer and administrative anchor at the district level. Operating under the direct supervision of the Cabinet Division and the Ministry of Public Administration, DCs represent the central government across regional territories. Their responsibilities encompass general administration, revenue collection, land management, and law and order maintenance in their capacity as District Magistrates.
Beyond executive functions, DCs coordinate inter-departmental activities among nation-building agencies, oversee public sector infrastructure projects, and direct local emergency response initiatives during natural disasters. The appointment of mid-level administrative cadres—typically drawn from the Deputy Secretary rank of the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) Administration cadre—aims to strengthen field governance, streamline public service delivery, and maintain public order across rural and urban administrative zones.
The newly appointed officers are expected to formally assume their responsibilities in Natore, Gaibandha, and Rangpur following standard handover procedures at their respective District Commissioner offices.
