Crackdown Nets 152 Extortion Suspects

A coordinated nationwide crackdown on extortion networks has led to the arrest of 152 individuals within two days, according to the acting Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Mohammad Sarwar. The arrests include 58 individuals identified as listed extortionists and 94 alleged accomplices linked to organised extortion operations.

The anti-extortion drive began on the first of the month and has been described by police as part of an intensified effort to dismantle organised criminal networks operating in the capital. Speaking at a press briefing held on Sunday at the DMP Media Centre, Commissioner Sarwar confirmed that operations will continue without interruption in the coming days.

He stated that law enforcement agencies have recovered significant evidence during the arrests, including extortion ledgers, transaction records, video footage, and other materials believed to be directly linked to illegal collections. These evidentiary materials will be submitted before the court as part of ongoing investigations.

Addressing questions from journalists, the acting commissioner took a firm stance against political or external influence in securing the release of detainees. He remarked that no arrested extortion suspect would be released through lobbying or pressure. He further warned that any individual attempting to intervene on behalf of the accused would be treated as potentially connected to the criminal network under investigation.

In addition to the extortion crackdown, the DMP chief also highlighted recent anti-narcotics operations. He noted that several major drug consignments had been seized in recent days, with multiple individuals arrested in connection with trafficking. He added that police efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend the so-called “godfathers” behind these criminal enterprises.

Commissioner Sarwar emphasised that the identity or social standing of suspects would not influence law enforcement action. According to him, all offenders, regardless of influence or status, will face continued police operations and legal proceedings.
