College Student Dies in Dhaka Crash

A college student was killed in Dhaka’s Demra area after being run over by a truck travelling in the wrong direction, in a road traffic incident that occurred on Saturday (2 May) at approximately 8:30 pm. The accident took place on the Demra Road, between the Dellah and Paiti areas.

The deceased has been identified as Mashrafi Mustakim Alif (25), a third-year undergraduate student in the Science Department at Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College in the capital.

According to available information, Alif resided in the Kutubkhali area of Jatrabari in Dhaka. He was the eldest of two brothers. His father’s name is Jewel Dewan. Family members stated that alongside his academic studies, he was engaged in part-time employment. His maternal uncle, Alauddin Jony, confirmed that he identified the body at Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 11:00 pm on the night of the incident.

Police reports indicate that the accident occurred when a truck was travelling in the opposite direction along the Jatrabari–Demra Expressway. At the stretch between Dellah and Paiti, the truck struck the motorcycle ridden by Alif. He was subsequently crushed under the vehicle’s wheels and sustained severe injuries.

Locals, together with police personnel, rescued the injured student from beneath the truck and transported him to hospital for emergency treatment. However, upon arrival, attending doctors declared him dead.

An auto-rickshaw driver, Rashedul Islam, who transported the victim to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, confirmed that medical staff pronounced Alif deceased shortly after arrival.

Following the incident, the truck driver fled the scene. Law enforcement officials later recovered and seized the vehicle involved in the collision. The driver, however, remains at large, according to police statements.

Inspector Md Faruk of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp confirmed the death and stated that the body had been kept at the hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. He further added that Demra Police Station is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
