An elderly woman has died after being struck by a speeding motorcycle while attempting to cross a busy road in the Demra area of the capital.
The incident occurred at around 10:00 p.m. on Sunday (3 May) on the Boro Bhanga bypass road in Demra. The victim, identified as Dalimon Nessa (78), sustained critical injuries after being hit from behind by the motorcycle while crossing the road.
Locals rushed her to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital shortly after the accident. However, attending physicians declared her dead upon arrival.
According to her son, Sohrab Uddin, the family originally hails from Suhaghpur village in Nalitabari upazila of Sherpur district. They currently reside in a rented house in the Sarulia area of Demra. He stated that his mother worked in various households as a domestic worker to support the family.
He further explained that she had returned home after completing her work on Sunday night. While crossing the road near their residence, she was struck by a fast-moving motorcycle approaching from behind. The impact left her critically injured, and she was immediately taken to hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead.
Police from Demra Police Station confirmed that the motorcycle involved in the incident has not yet been identified. Sub-Inspector Md. Abdur Rouf stated that the body was handed over to the family following their request, without an autopsy.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any legal case has been formally filed regarding the incident.
