Vaibhav Suryavanshi: The Rise of a Cricket Prodigy

In November 2024, during the preparations for the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction in Saudi Arabia, Zubin Bharucha, the Director of High Performance for Rajasthan Royals, made a startling request to the franchise management: “Set aside 10 crore rupees for one player.” The management’s reaction was one of disbelief, questioning if Bharucha had lost his senses. The subject of this massive valuation was not an established international star, but a 13-year-old boy from Tajpur, a remote village in Bihar.

The Discovery of a Rare Talent

Bharucha’s conviction stemmed from a trial at the Royals Academy in Talegaon, Maharashtra. He observed the young boy facing a left-arm pacer from Karnataka who was bowling at significant speeds. To the amazement of the observers, the boy dispatched a delivery over extra cover and into the stands. Bharucha recalled similar first impressions of stars like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson, noting that some players possess an innate ability to do something extraordinary from the very first ball.

To further test the youngster, Bharucha arranged a session with “sidearm” specialists capable of delivering balls at speeds of 157–158 km/h. Despite his small stature, Vaibhav Suryavanshi remained unfazed. After calmly defending the initial deliveries, he struck a 157 km/h short ball over the sightscreen for a six. Bharucha described the feat as “God-gifted,” subsequently telling the Rajasthan Royals management that Vaibhav was “Jaiswal multiplied by two.”

Career Milestones and Achievements

Vaibhav’s rise has been marked by record-breaking performances at a very young age. While Rajasthan Royals eventually secured him for 1.1 crore rupees in the auction, his impact on the field far exceeded his price tag.

Milestone Achievement Details
IPL Debut Age 14 years and 32 days
Fastest Century 35 balls (Second fastest in IPL history after Chris Gayle)
First-Class Debut 12 years and 284 days (Ranji Trophy)
U-19 International 175 runs off 80 balls against England (15 sixes)
Tournament Stats 444 runs at a strike rate of 162
Auction Value 1.1 crore INR (Rajasthan Royals)

The Journey from Tajpur to the Global Stage

The story begins in Tajpur, Samastipur, where agriculture is the primary livelihood. Vaibhav’s father, Sanjeev Suryavanshi, was an aspiring cricketer who could not fulfill his dreams due to Bihar’s lack of BCCI recognition at the time. Sanjeev worked various jobs in Mumbai, including as a nightclub bouncer, before returning to the family jewellery business. He gifted Vaibhav a Kashmiri willow bat on his fourth birthday, initiating the boy’s journey.

By 2018, Sanjeev began driving Vaibhav 200 kilometres every two days to the Gen-Next Academy in Patna. Under coach Manish Kumar Ojha, Vaibhav would face at least 600 balls a day. Prior to this, he trained under Brajesh Jha in Samastipur. Vaibhav’s success has since transformed the local sports culture; the Samastipur municipal ground, once a multi-sport field, is now a hub for young cricketers inspired by his trajectory.

Technical Prowess and Character

Though his aggressive style draws comparisons to Rishabh Pant, Vaibhav’s idol is Brian Lara. He refined his high backlift—a technique Bharucha describes as physically demanding yet effortless for the boy—by watching Lara on YouTube. Beyond his technical skills, Vaibhav is noted for his maturity. Despite his youth, he serves as the vice-captain of the Bihar team and displays a leadership quality that Bharucha believes makes him a future captaincy candidate.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s journey from a village with minimal facilities to becoming a multi-million-rupee IPL asset is a testament to extraordinary talent and paternal sacrifice. Today, the village of Tajpur is widely recognised as the home of the boy who conquered 157 km/h deliveries before he was even a teenager.
