A 26-year-old doctor, Abid Hasan Jisan, was found dead in a rented apartment in the Shahbagh area of Dhaka on Monday, prompting police to begin an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to hospital and police sources, Jisan had been residing with several colleagues in a shared flat on Habibullah Road, a residential area near Shahbagh frequently occupied by students and young professionals due to its proximity to major medical institutions.
Jisan was originally from Chuadanga Sadar Upazila and was the son of Ahsan Habib. He completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from Kushtia Medical College as part of the 2018–19 academic session. After graduating, he completed his internship training and had recently been working at Popular Diagnostic Centre, one of the country’s prominent private healthcare service providers.
According to statements from his roommate and colleague, Dipto Singha, the incident came to light when he returned to the apartment around midday and noticed Jisan lying motionless on his bed in an unusual condition. After repeatedly calling out to him and receiving no response, Dipto and others quickly arranged to take him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Doctors at the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital conducted an examination and officially declared him dead at approximately 2:30 pm.
Dipto stated that when he left the residence earlier in the morning, Jisan appeared normal and had spoken with his family at home shortly before.
Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the police outpost at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, confirmed the matter. He said the body had been sent to the hospital morgue for further examination and that the relevant police station had been informed to proceed with legal formalities and investigation.
At this stage, authorities have not publicly disclosed any preliminary cause of death. Police typically await post-mortem findings before making further statements in such cases.
The death of young medical professionals often draws public concern in Bangladesh, where junior doctors frequently work under demanding schedules involving long hours, overnight duties and high professional pressure.
