Forty-Five Arrested in Dhaka Medical College Hospital Raid

A coordinated joint operation was conducted at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Monday, 4 May 2026, to dismantle an organised network of brokers (locally known as middlemen or ‘dalals’) and to prevent the harassment of patients. The crackdown was executed through the collective efforts of the National Security Intelligence (NSI), the Bangladesh Police, and an Executive Magistrate.

Overview of the Operation

The raid commenced in the early hours of Monday morning, following persistent allegations regarding the exploitation of vulnerable patients seeking treatment at the country’s largest state-run medical facility. Law enforcement officials targeted individuals suspected of coercing patients into transferring to private clinics or purchasing unnecessary medical supplies.

During the drive, a total of 45 individuals were apprehended. This group includes suspected brokers and several representatives from various pharmaceutical companies. Following their detention on the hospital premises, the suspects were transported to Shahbagh Police Station via police prison vans for further processing and verification of their identities.

Breakdown of Detainees

According to Masud Alam, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the Ramna Division, the operation was necessitated by long-standing complaints of irregularities. He noted that while similar raids have been conducted in the past, the involvement of the NSI in this instance provided critical intelligence that enhanced the effectiveness of the intervention.

The composition of the 45 detained individuals is detailed below:

Category of Detainees Number of Individuals
Total Detained 45
Female Suspects 5
Pharmaceutical Representatives 18–19
Suspected Brokers/Others 21–22

Violations by Pharmaceutical Representatives

A significant portion of those detained were medical promotion officers or pharmaceutical representatives. DC Masud Alam clarified that the hospital operates under strict protocols regarding the presence of such representatives.

  • Designated Visiting Days: Mondays and Thursdays.

  • Permitted Entry Time: After 12:00 PM.

  • Nature of Violation: Many representatives were found positioned inside the hospital wards and corridors well before the sanctioned time, contributing to the congestion and disruption of medical services.

Legal Actions and Next Steps

The authorities have outlined a bifurcated approach for dealing with the detainees based on the nature of their involvement:

  1. Pharmaceutical Representatives: These individuals are currently undergoing a screening process. The police stated that they would be released upon providing a formal written undertaking (a recognisance bond or muchleka), pledging not to violate hospital regulations in the future.

  2. Organised Brokers: Individuals identified as active members of the broker syndicates will face immediate legal consequences. Their cases are being referred to a Mobile Court, where an Executive Magistrate will preside over summary trials and issue sentences or fines in accordance with existing laws.

The administration of Dhaka Medical College Hospital has reiterated its commitment to maintaining a transparent environment for patients. Law enforcement officials confirmed that such operations will continue periodically to ensure that the healthcare delivery system remains free from external interference and fraudulent activities.
