The President of Inter Milan, Giuseppe Marotta, has publicly acknowledged that FC Barcelona are monitoring the availability of Italian international defender Alessandro Bastoni ahead of the forthcoming summer transfer window. The 25-year-old centre-back, widely regarded as a cornerstone of the Nerazzurri’s defensive unit at the San Siro, has emerged as a primary target for the Catalan giants as they seek to reinforce their backline.
In an extensive interview with Radio Anch’io Sport, Marotta addressed the persistent rumours linking the Italian defender with a move to the Camp Nou. While he confirmed that interest from Barcelona exists, he clarified that no formal negotiations or concrete bids have been initiated by the Spanish club at this stage.
Marotta emphasised the importance of the player’s personal intent in any high-profile transfer. “I will not deny that Barcelona are interested in Bastoni, but as of yet, no specific proposal has arrived,” Marotta stated. He further added that “a player only departs a club when he expresses a personal desire to leave. At this moment, he is happy with us, and we are equally satisfied with his contributions.”
The President also defended the player following recent scrutiny. Describing Bastoni as a “great champion,” Marotta noted that while the defender faced criticism for a specific error during a high-stakes fixture against Juventus, the club remains fully supportive of him. He reaffirmed that internal confidence in Bastoni’s abilities remains unshaken despite occasional individual lapses in performance.
The interest from Barcelona appears to be driven by the specific requirements of their head coach, Hansi Flick. The German manager is reportedly intent on strengthening the squad’s defensive core by acquiring a technically proficient, left-footed central defender. Bastoni, who is known for his exceptional ball-playing ability, vision, and tactical discipline, is viewed by the Barcelona hierarchy as the ideal profile to integrate into Flick’s system.
Bastoni’s versatility, particularly his capacity to initiate attacks from the back and his comfort in a high defensive line, makes him a highly sought-after asset in European football. For Barcelona, securing a left-sided specialist would provide the tactical balance currently sought for their defensive rotations.
Although Inter Milan have enjoyed significant domestic success—securing three Serie A titles over the past five years—the club’s broader financial landscape continues to be a subject of speculation. Economic pressures within the Italian football market mean that should Barcelona submit a substantial financial offer, it could present the Inter board with a difficult decision regarding the sale of one of their most valuable assets.
However, Marotta’s comments also shed light on Inter’s commitment to maintaining a domestic core within the squad. He articulated a long-term vision that prioritises a strong foundation of Italian players. According to Marotta, the presence of footballers who possess a profound understanding of the tactical intricacies of Serie A is essential for any club aspiring to win the Scudetto.
This philosophy suggests that while international interest in stars like Bastoni is inevitable, Inter Milan intend to resist the departure of their home-grown and national-team talents. Bastoni, an integral member of the Italian national squad (Azzurri), represents exactly the type of foundational player Marotta wishes to retain.
Alessandro Bastoni remains under contract at the San Siro, and unless the player formally requests a transfer, the Inter Milan administration appears determined to rebuff casual enquiries. The situation is expected to develop as the summer window approaches, with the final decision likely resting on a combination of Barcelona’s financial resolve and Bastoni’s commitment to the Inter project. For now, the player remains a central figure in Inter’s pursuit of further silverware under the guidance of Simone Inzaghi.
