Bangladeshi music legend Runa Laila has strongly dismissed false rumours circulating on social media claiming that she had passed away, describing the reports as entirely baseless and distressing.
The speculation began on Monday evening following her participation in the Minar-e-Delhi award ceremony in India, where she attended as a guest. Shortly after her appearance at the event, unverified posts began spreading across various social media platforms falsely announcing her death. The misinformation quickly gained traction, causing widespread confusion and concern among her admirers across Bangladesh and abroad.
In response, the celebrated singer issued a clear statement on her official Facebook page reassuring fans of her wellbeing. She wrote that she is “completely healthy and well,” and urged the public not to share unverified claims. She further emphasised the emotional toll such rumours can have on both her and her family, appealing for greater responsibility in verifying information before dissemination.
Runa Laila also revealed that she was taken aback by the sudden influx of phone calls and messages from concerned friends, colleagues, and fans spanning multiple countries. According to her statement, individuals from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, the United States, and the United Kingdom all reached out to confirm whether she was safe. She described the situation as both surprising and unsettling.
She expressed particular frustration that such misinformation continues to circulate despite repeated incidents involving public figures. In her view, the spread of these false reports may be linked to organised groups or individuals operating without accountability. She called for those responsible to be identified and for stronger measures to prevent the recurrence of such harmful content.
This is not the first time public personalities in the region have been targeted by similar death hoaxes, highlighting an ongoing issue surrounding digital misinformation and the rapid spread of unverified news online.
