Journalist Seriously Injured in Attack

A district correspondent for a national daily and television channel has been seriously injured following a violent attack by unidentified assailants in the southern district of Jhalokathi, Bangladesh.

Moinul Haque Lipu, who serves as a Jhalokathi district correspondent for Daily Desh Rupantor and ATN News, was attacked on Tuesday (6 May) at around 4:00 pm in Ward No. 1 of the Sadar Union under Rajapur Upazila.

According to local sources, a group of attackers launched a sudden and coordinated assault while he was present in the area. The assailants allegedly used sharp weapons, repeatedly striking him and leaving him with severe injuries. His cries for help drew the attention of nearby residents, who rushed to the scene. On arrival of local people, the attackers fled immediately.

He was first taken to Rajapur Upazila Health Complex, where he received initial emergency treatment before being admitted for further care due to the seriousness of his condition.

Allegations over prior dispute

In his statement, the injured journalist claimed that the attack stemmed from a dispute linked to the theft of a water pump belonging to his cousin. He alleged that several individuals, including Shanto (25), son of Aslam Hossain; Rizon Sikder (22), son of Chunnu Sikder; Shakil Sikder; and approximately 7–8 unidentified associates, carried out the assault.

He further stated that the group attacked him without warning and inflicted multiple blows with sharp-edged weapons, causing significant injuries.

Local response and police statement

Residents of the area reported that the situation created panic locally, with people rushing to intervene after hearing the victim’s cries. The attackers reportedly escaped before they could be apprehended.

It has also been noted by locals that one of the accused, Shanto, had previously been arrested in connection with a narcotics-related case, although further official confirmation on his legal status has not been provided in this report.

Speaking on the incident, Rajapur Circle Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Shah Alam stated that the matter would be investigated if a formal complaint is lodged. He added that appropriate legal action would be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.

Authorities are expected to examine CCTV footage and witness statements, while also verifying the background and motives of those allegedly involved. The condition of the injured journalist remains under medical supervision.
