A tragic road traffic accident on the Dhaka-Barisal Highway has resulted in the immediate deaths of a grandmother and her young granddaughter. The incident occurred on Tuesday, 5 May 2026, in the Uzirpur Upazila of Barisal district, specifically in front of the Kazi Bari in West Jayshree village.
According to official reports, the victims have been identified as Roksana Yasmin, aged 65, the widow of the late Pannu Kazi, and her seven-year-old granddaughter, Arfa. Arfa was the daughter of Roksana’s son, Rubel Kazi. Both victims were residents of West Jayshree village.
The accident took place at approximately 12:30 pm. According to witnesses and local authorities, the two individuals were attempting to cross the highway when they were struck by a passenger bus belonging to Hanif Paribahan. The vehicle was reportedly travelling at an excessive speed at the time of the collision. Following the impact, the driver did not stop the vehicle but instead fled the scene immediately. Both Roksana Yasmin and Arfa succumbed to their injuries at the site of the accident.

Md. Mahsin Hossain, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gournadi Highway Police Station, confirmed the details of the tragedy. Upon receiving news of the collision, a team from the Gournadi Highway Police arrived at the location to secure the area and recover the bodies. The remains were subsequently transported to the local hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.
The Officer-in-Charge noted that while the bus has been identified as a Hanif Paribahan unit, the driver managed to evade immediate arrest. Law enforcement agencies are currently conducting operations to locate and seize the vehicle, as well as apprehend the individual responsible for the reckless driving.
The Dhaka-Barisal Highway is a critical arterial route in Bangladesh, frequently cited in official reports for high traffic volumes and frequent road safety incidents. The stretch passing through Uzirpur is particularly noted for its proximity to residential areas like West Jayshree, where pedestrian crossings are common.
Authorities have registered a formal case regarding the incident, and legal proceedings are expected to follow once the driver is in custody. The Highway Police have reiterated their commitment to enforcing speed limits and improving safety measures on this major thoroughfare to prevent similar fatalities. Further investigations into the mechanical state of the bus and the driver’s credentials will be part of the standard legal process.
