Police Apprehend Narcotics Dealer in Chittagong Raid

Police authorities in Chittagong have arrested a suspected narcotics trader following a successful tactical operation in a residential sector of the city. On Tuesday, 5 May 2026, officers from the EPZ Police Station raided a property in the Madrazi Shah Para area, resulting in the seizure of a substantial cache of illegal drugs, including 2,200 Yaba tablets and 5 kilograms of cannabis.

The individual in custody has been identified as 32-year-old Mohammad Nizam, also known as Nezam. According to police reports, Nizam is a resident of the Bandartila neighbourhood. Evidence gathered at the scene suggests that the suspect had been utilizing a residential apartment as a hub for his illicit distribution activities.

Procedural Details of the ‘Sagar Villa’ Operation

The raid was initiated following a period of surveillance and the receipt of precise intelligence regarding the storage of narcotics within a building titled Sagar Villa. A specialized police unit, under the direct command of Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Atiqur Rahman, targeted a specific room located on the fourth floor of the complex.

Upon securing the premises and conducting a thorough search, law enforcement officers recovered the following:

  • Narcotics: A total of 2,200 Yaba tablets—a potent methamphetamine-based stimulant—and 5 kilograms of processed cannabis.

  • Currency: Cash amounting to 70,720 Bangladeshi Taka. Based on the denominations and the context of the discovery, investigators believe this sum represents the proceeds from recent drug sales.

  • Transport: A motorcycle found at the scene was seized. Authorities suspect the vehicle was used as the primary mode of transport for the “home delivery” of narcotics to various clients across the port city.

Nizam was apprehended inside the apartment. The recovered items have been logged as evidence, providing a comprehensive basis for charges under the Narcotics Control Act.

Criminal Background and Legal Action

The subsequent investigation into Nizam’s history has revealed a recurring pattern of criminal activity. Police files indicate that the suspect is a “habitual offender” with a documented criminal record. He currently faces multiple active legal proceedings at both the Bandar and EPZ police stations, with charges ranging from narcotics trafficking to violations of the Arms Act. This history suggests that the suspect is part of a more established criminal element within the Chittagong metropolitan area.

Confirming the latest legal steps, OC Muhammad Atiqur Rahman stated:

“A fresh case has been registered at the EPZ Police Station in connection with this incident. Following the completion of mandatory legal formalities and initial processing, the arrested individual has been forwarded to the court for judicial proceedings.”

Broader Impact on Local Security

The Export Processing Zone (EPZ) and its surrounding residential areas, such as Bandartila and Madrazi Shah Para, are high-priority zones for the Chittagong Metropolitan Police due to their dense population and industrial significance. Operations like the raid at Sagar Villa are part of a broader strategy to eliminate localized drug dens that target the industrial workforce and local youth.

The seizure of Yaba is particularly significant given the drug’s high addiction potential and its status as a major public health concern in Bangladesh. Authorities are now shifting their focus toward the suspect’s supply chain. By interrogating the detainee and analyzing the seized motorcycle’s registration data through the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), police aim to identify the larger distributors responsible for bringing these substances into the city.

Nizam remains in judicial custody while the formal investigation continues. The police have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a “zero-tolerance” policy regarding narcotics distribution within the municipality.
