The Appellate Division’s chamber court has upheld bail in two additional cases filed with Siddhirganj Police Station, effectively clearing the final legal hurdle to the release of former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Selina Hayat Ivy.
On Sunday (17 May), Chamber Judge Justice Md Rezaul Haque of the Appellate Division passed the order, confirming earlier bail decisions granted by the High Court. With this ruling, Ivy now retains bail in a total of 12 separate cases.
Her legal counsel, advocate Motahar Hossain Saju, stated that there is now no remaining legal obstacle to her release from custody, as all relevant bail orders have been upheld by the apex court’s chamber jurisdiction.
The legal proceedings against Ivy stem largely from a series of cases linked to incidents during the anti-discrimination movement in Narayanganj. On 10 May, the Appellate Division upheld High Court bail orders in 10 separate cases involving allegations including murder and attempted murder. That decision came from a bench led by the Chief Justice.
Previously, in November of the preceding year, Ivy was shown arrested in five additional cases. The High Court bench of Justice KM Jahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher later granted her bail on 26 February in those matters.
Among those five cases, four were murder-related—linked respectively to the killings of bus driver Abul Hossain Mizi, Abdus Rahman, Md Yasin, and Parvez—filed under Fatuallah Police Station. The remaining case involved allegations of assault and obstruction of government duties filed under Siddhirganj Model Police Station.
Following the High Court’s decision, the State appealed, prompting the Appellate Division’s chamber court to temporarily stay the bail orders on 5 March and refer the matter for regular hearing. After a full hearing, bail was ultimately upheld in all 10 cases.
Two further cases were subsequently brought against Ivy, in which she was shown arrested later. The High Court granted bail in those two matters on 30 April, and the Chamber Court has now affirmed those orders as well.
| Stage | Number of Cases | Court Action | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial High Court bail | 5 cases | Murder and attempted murder-related cases | Bail granted, later stayed |
| Additional arrests shown | 5 cases | Fatuallah & Siddhirganj cases | High Court bail granted (26 Feb) |
| Appellate Division review | 10 cases | State appeal & chamber hearing | Bail ultimately upheld |
| Subsequent cases | 2 cases | Fresh charges | High Court bail (30 Apr), now upheld |
| Final chamber order | 12 total cases | Siddhirganj cases included | Bail fully upheld; no legal barrier to release |
With the chamber court’s latest ruling, all 12 cases now stand with confirmed bail orders, bringing a significant legal reprieve for the former city mayor.
