A businessman from the Chauddagram Upazila in Comilla has succumbed to injuries sustained during a violent assault by unidentified assailants. The victim, who was attacked while returning home after closing his shop on Tuesday night, died early Wednesday morning during a transfer between medical facilities in Dhaka.
The deceased has been identified as Anwar Hossain, also known as Nayan, aged 35. He was the son of the late Abdul Hai, a resident of Betiara village within the Jagannathdighi Union of Chauddagram. Mr Hossain operated a small business in the local Gangra Bazaar, specialising in the sale of betel nuts and footwear.
According to police and local eyewitnesses, the incident occurred at approximately 11:00 pm on Tuesday. Mr Hossain had shuttered his business premises and was walking towards his residence. As he reached the vicinity of the South Betiara Mosque, a group of assailants intercepted him. The attackers reportedly used sharp weapons to hack the victim and inflicted severe trauma to his head before fleeing the scene.
Upon hearing the victim’s cries for help, local residents rushed to the site and rescued him. He was initially transported to the Chauddagram Upazila Health Complex. Due to the critical nature of his injuries, he was subsequently referred to Comilla Medical College Hospital.
As his clinical condition continued to deteriorate, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for advanced neurological and surgical intervention. According to the victim’s sister, Kohinoor Akhter, the family encountered difficulties at DMCH regarding oxygen availability. Consequently, a decision was made to move him to a private hospital. Mr Hossain was pronounced dead while in transit to the private facility.
As of Wednesday afternoon, law enforcement authorities have yet to identify or apprehend the suspects involved in the homicide. However, the Chauddagram Police have established a preliminary lead regarding the motive.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chauddagram Police Station, Mohammad Arif Hossain, stated that the victim had been involved in a long-standing dispute over land with a particular local faction. Preliminary findings suggest that this dispute may have served as the catalyst for the fatal assault.
The body has been sent for a formal post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. OC Hossain confirmed that an active investigation is underway and legal measures are being executed to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
