The internal friction at Santos FC has reached a resolution after Neymar issued a public apology to his teammate, Robinho Junior, following a physical altercation during a training session. The incident, which occurred last Sunday, had initially threatened to derail Neymar’s international prospects and the club’s stability, but a formal reconciliation took place in the aftermath of a recent continental fixture.
The confrontation began during a standard training drill when Robinho Junior, an 18-year-old forward and the son of Brazilian legend Robinho, successfully dribbled past Neymar. Reports indicate that Neymar reacted aggressively, leading to a heated verbal exchange that escalated into physical contact.
Robinho Junior subsequently lodged three formal complaints against Neymar:
The use of offensive insults.
An intentional trip during play.
A physical strike (slapping).
Following the incident, Robinho Junior threatened to terminate his contract with Santos unless the club took disciplinary action. This prompted the club to announce an official investigation, sparking concerns that a potential suspension could impact Neymar’s availability for the Brazilian national team in the upcoming World Cup.

Efforts to mend the relationship began early in the week. According to the Brazilian media outlet UOL, Neymar contacted Robinho Junior via telephone to express regret, and a representative for Neymar met with the teenager’s mother, Vivian. Although private overtures were made, the younger player’s management insisted on a public apology.
The turning point occurred during a Copa Sudamericana match against the Paraguayan club Deportivo Recoleta. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with Neymar scoring the solitary goal for Santos. Immediately following the goal, Neymar celebrated by embracing Robinho Junior, signalling a public thaw in their relationship.
Speaking to journalists in the mixed zone after the match, Neymar stated:
“This happens in football. It should have stayed between us. I became overexcited due to a misunderstanding during training. However, I apologised immediately after the incident. We spoke in the dressing room and have settled everything.”
Neymar further admitted that he had “overreacted” and acknowledged that while the initial error on the pitch was his teammate’s, his own reaction was the greater mistake. He also expressed frustration that internal dressing room matters had been leaked to the public, accusing outsiders of exaggerating the situation.
The situation is complicated by the historical connection between the two families. Neymar was a long-time teammate of the elder Robinho at both Santos and the Brazilian national team. The elder Robinho is currently serving a nine-year prison sentence at the Limeira Reintegration Centre in São Paulo following a conviction for rape.
Robinho Junior, who views Neymar as a childhood idol, confirmed he would withdraw the legal notice sent to the club. “I was very upset because he is my idol,” he said. “It was just a mistake. He admitted his error. People are saying many things that are not true, and it is a shame it reached this level.”
Reports from the Limeira Reintegration Centre suggest that when the elder Robinho heard of the altercation from a prison employee, he was deeply distressed. However, the news of the successful reconciliation is expected to provide some relief to the former Real Madrid and Manchester City striker.
